Week 4 Football Rewind: Edgewater kicks Jones; 8 others remain unbeaten

Edgewater kicker Jacob Lue Pann picked the perfect time to kick the first two field goals of his life Friday night.

His second one — a 26-yarder with 2 seconds remaining against Jones — gave the Eagles a 20-17 victory and kept Edgewater (4-0), No. 1 in the Sentinel’s Super 16 Coaches Poll, among the eight other teams that remain unbeaten after Week 4 high school football play in the Orlando area.

High school football live Week 4: Edgewater, Boone, Dr. Phillips, Osceola score big victories

Upstart Ocoee, which had been impressive in the first three weeks of the season, looked well on its way to a 4-0 record, leading Dr. Phillips 22-7. DP, however, turned the tables by scoring 22 unanswered points to prevail 29-22. West Orange also fell from the ranks of the unbeatens in a battle of two teams that had not lost a game, falling at Boone 27-21. And in the country’s longest-running-rivalry 100th-anniversary game, Osceola handed St. Cloud its first loss, 48-7.

Bishop Moore, DeLand, Lake Brantley, East Ridge, Windermere, Umatilla and Central Florida Christian also remain unbeaten.

Three first-year coaches got their first victories: Marcus Neeson at Apopka, Cameron Phillips at East River and Alex Russell at Pine Ridge. Meanwhile, Cypress Creek saw its losing streak stretch to 25 games.

No. 1 Edgewater 20, No. 2 Jones 17: Lue Pann’s field goal with time running out set off an on-field celebration as he was mobbed by his teammates.

“That’s the best feeling in the world,” said Lue Pann, a junior who also hit a 38-yard field goal in the first half. “I was a little nervous, but my boys on the sideline were hyping me up, and I just went out there and did my thing.”

First-year Edgewater coach Patrick Browning was introduced to the Jones-Edgewater rivalry in fancy fashion. The two teams had split eight games over the past two seasons, and Jones (2-2) knocked Edgewater out of the playoffs in 2022 and 2023.

“Man,  that was fun. How can you not be proud to be a part of a game like that coming down to the last play of the game? Unreal,” Browning said. “Much respect to Jones, but I’m really, really proud of our team tonight.

“It was electric. Felt like a state championship atmosphere. As a coach, these are the games you want to be a part of.”

Lue Pann’s heroics were set up by a crucial Edgewater defensive stop with 45 seconds left in the game. Jones had a 4th-and-1 play at the Edgewater 46-yard line, and the Eagles stuffed the Tigers for the second time in the fourth quarter.

After the defensive stand, Edgewater senior quarterback Carter Emanuel, a UConn commit, hit Grayson Gibson with a 34-yard pass and running back Damian Moore gained 12 yards on two straight runs to set up Lue Pann.

Emanuel was 16-of-26 passing for 231 yards, including TD passes to Alex Rossi for 21 yards and brother Cole Emanuel for 15 yards. The brothers Emanuel connected 5 times for 92 yards. Jones running back Daunte Wallace did most of the work for the Tigers, running for 107 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.

Aiden Anderson, who had 2 sacks, Miami commit JJ Edwards and Wesley Hendry (1 sack) led the Edgewater defense.

No. 13 Boone 27, No. 3 West Orange 21: Senior running back Aaron Hardy led the way for Boone, which is 4-0 for the first time since 2008, with 210 yards and 3 touchdowns on 31 carries.

“We won the line of scrimmage. Aaron ran the ball unbelievably,” said Boone coach Andy Johnson, who has never had a Boone team start 4-0 in his previous 12 seasons.

The Braves did win five in a row in 2020 after losing the first game. In 2008, under Phil Ziglar, the Braves went 11-3, losing in the state semifinals to eventual state champion Seminole.

“We felt if we can win up front, we can win the game,” Johnson said. “That’s what we did. Some timely runs from the QB, some timely completions, nothing sexy, but we made the plays we needed to make.”

Sam Johnson, the coach’s son, was 7-of-14 passing for 72 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He added 46 yards on the ground.

No. 4 Bishop Moore 57, Mount Dora 21: The Hornets (4-0) rolled up 605 yards as sophomore quarterback Blake McCullough tossed 5 TDs on 16-of-23 passing for 337 yards. Amar’e Johnson ran for 130 yards and a touchdown, Magnus Talma had 3 catches for 119 yards and a touchdown, and Kenyon Alston had 4 catches for 90 yards and two scores.

No. 9 Dr. Phillips 29, No. 13 Ocoee 22: After spotting Ocoee (3-1) a 15-point lead, Dr. Phillips (3-1) came storming back for the victory. DP completed the rally with a game-winning touchdown on a 47-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Tien Williams to senior receiver Zhytrez Ervin.

Williams was in for senior Camren West, who left the game with an ankle injury. Before departing, West scored on runs of 60 and 26 yards. Zion Matthews also had a 30-yard touchdown run.

Ocoee touchdowns came from Michael Blackmon and Nehemiah Burgess, both on 8-yard runs, and quarterback Tyson Davison connected with Kamari Shaw for a 27-yard scoring pass.

No. 10 DeLand 46, Appling (Ga.) 30: Once again the single-wing rushing machine of coach Rick Darlington was tearing up the turf. DeLand (4-0) rolled to 391 yards, with senior Marceles Cary rushing for 153 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries and sophomore Taihj Moore racking up 129 yards and 3 touchdowns on 18 carries.

Junior quarterback Gardner Nordman added a bit of passing for good measure, completing 8-of-11 passes for 139 yards and 2 touchdowns. Darlington said two incompletions were throw-aways.

DeLand is averaging 354 yards per game on the ground.

No. 11 Lake Brantley 48, Flagler Palm Coast 7: Brantley (4-0) continued to showcase its explosive offense, guided by quarterback Jackson Stecher. The sophomore threw for 321 yards and 2 touchdowns and ran for more than 100 yards and two more scores. Davon Washington had more than 150 yards receiving and caught 2 TD passes. Running backs CJ Dewberry and KJ Bradford also had big games.

Winter Springs 60, Liberty 6: Coach Tim Dycus finally has things going for Winter Springs (3-1) in his fourth season. The Bears rolled past Liberty with Omar Scott rushing for 3 touchdowns and quarterback Isaac Johnson throwing 3 touchdown passes. On defense, Jaylen Lowman had a pair of interceptions, as did Isiah Rouse, who returned one for a touchdown. Lowman has 6 interceptions in four games.
