Edgewater (7-0) survived a scare at Winter Park on Friday night, and the Eagles lost a little bit of ground at the top of this week’s Super 16 Coaches Poll, losing two first-place votes. They were still a predominant choice at No. 1 or the fifth week in a row.
Edgewater can win the Class 5A District 5 title Friday night with a win at Winter Springs (5-2).
The other first-place votes went to Bishop Moore (6-0), which was idle last week, and DeLand (6-0), a 28-20 winner over Mainland. Bishop Moore remained at No. 3, and DeLand moved up a spot from last week to No. 7.
Week 7 Football Rewind: Edgewater, DeLand still unbeaten; Oviedo wins
Jones (4-2) held steady at No. 2, Dr. Phillips (5-1) moved up a position to No. 4, and undefeated Boone (6-0) moved up one position to No. 5. The First Academy, which lost on the road at national power St. Frances Academy of Baltimore, dropped two spots to No. 6.
The rest of the Top 10 was rounded out by Evans (5-1) at No. 8, Osceola (4-2) at No. 9 and Lake Mary (4-2) at No. 10.
There are some big games on the slate this week and the annual showdown between Lake Mary and Seminole highlights the list. Seminole (3-3) is ranked just below the rival Rams at No. 12. This game has determined the district champion in each of the past two years and this year looks no different, although upstart Lake Brantley (5-1), ranked No. 15, is still holding out hope in 7A-3.
Brantley lost to Seminole, so the Patriots will need some help (and a win vs. Lake Mary) to claim the title. The Patriots face Hagerty (3-3) on Friday and Lake Mary at home on Oct. 24.
The 7A-9 title is on the line at unranked East Ridge (6-0) on Friday night, as No. 4 Dr. Phillips visits. The Knights are undefeated six games into the season for the first time since 2010, when East Ridge went 8-2 but failed to make the playoffs after finishing third in its district behind Apopka and Olympia.
Another clash that will likely determine a district championship is Friday’s No. 15 Winter Park (3-3) at No. 5 Boone game. Winter Park knocked Boone out of the playoffs last year and this game has become a bit of a rivalry.
Jones has to travel to play Lake Wales, which is 6-1. This game will likely determine the 4A-7 title.
Osceola can clinch the 6A-5 crown with a victory at home over Viera (4-2).
Windermere (6-0) and Innovation (6-0) remain unbeaten but still sit outside the Super 16.
