What a trip: Marveling at Greece’s ancient marble weather station

Greece / submitted by Don Hart with Ricardo Macagnan of Virginia Beach

Last fall was our second visit to Athens, and it seems that something new is always discovered. As a Navy meteorologist, I couldn’t come across a better discovery than the world’s first meteorological weather station. The eight sides of this octagon-shaped structure, which is called the Tower of the Winds, take into account the eight cardinal directions of the wind compass. It lies in the ancient Roman Agora near the neighborhood of Plaka. This fantastic marble monument, restored and preserved, has stood here since the first century BC. Having taken hundreds of weather observations myself, I was amazed at those Greeks’ using this for scientific research and observation.
