MIAMI GARDENS — The thumb and hip injuries that surfaced for Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa this week are not overly concerning, according to offensive coordinator Frank Smith.
Smith said Thursday morning the Dolphins are not expecting the two new ailments, revealed on the team’s Wednesday evening release of its first injury report ahead of Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers, to affect his availability or hinder his play.
Tagovailoa was a limited participant in the Dolphins’ Wednesday practice, according to the team’s injury report.
Smith was not privy to when the thumb injury occurred or specifics about Tagovailoa’s new hip ailment.
The ailing thumb is on Tagovailoa’s left, throwing hand. The Dolphins’ sixth-year quarterback missed the final two games of the 2024 season due to a hip injury that was unrelated to the hip surgery he had that cut his college career at Alabama short.
Tagovailoa is coming off a three-touchdown, no-interception performance in last Sunday’s 27-24 loss to the Carolina Panthers. The lack of sustained drives and third-down conversions in the second half, however, in part led to Miami blowing a 17-0 lead.
