William & Mary men rout Abilene Christian to finish 2-0 in Jacksonville

William & Mary completed a 2-0 trip to the Jacksonville Classic in Florida with a 92-58 dusting Tuesday night of Abilene Christian.

The Tribe was missing Reese Miller because of injury, and Kyle Pulliam left because of injury 2:19 into the game in Edward Waters University’s arena. But W&M shot 64.7%, its best percentage against a Division I opponent since 2015, including 76.9% (20 of 26) in the second half. Six Tribe players scored in double digits.

Cade Haskins scored 20 points, hitting 6 of 8 from the floor, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range. Kilian Brockhoff had 14 points, four rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks, while Tunde Vahlberg Fasasi scored all 13 of his points in the first half and added three steals.

Jhei-R Jones had 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting, plus four rebounds and four assists. Chase Lowe and Ryan Jackson Jr. tallied 11 points apiece. Lowe added seven rebounds and five assists, while Jackson pulled down six rebounds.

The Tribe returns home to take on Old Dominion at 2 p.m. Sunday, and there will be a “Teddy Bear Toss” at halftime.

Hampton 74, Maryland Eastern Shore 68: Josh Ogundele’s 17 points helped the Pirates (3-5) beat the Hawks (3-6) before 2,112 in Princess Anne, Maryland.

Ogundele shot 4 of 6 from the field and 9 of 11 from the free-throw line. Michael Eley scored 13 points, going 4 of 8 and 4 of 4 from the free-throw line. Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt finished with 12 points, and Xzavier Long had eight points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Eunique Rink came off the bench for 10 points.

UMES reserve Zion Obanla had 20 points and nine rebounds coming off the bench. UMES, which closed a 24-8 deficit to 65-61 but never caught up, also got 18 points from Joseph Locandro and 13 from Justin Monden.

Ogundele scored eight points in the first half, and Gaines-Wyatt contributed 10 second-half points.

Norfolk State 136, Virginia University of Lynchburg 79: Tuning up for Saturday’s mammoth challenge at No. 2 Arizona, the Spartans (4-4) set their Division I-era record for points in a game as they dominated the National Christian College Athletic Association’s winless Dragons before 1,312 at Echols Hall.

Melo Baines was 15 of 15 from the field for 30 points and grabbed five rebounds, Anthony McComb III had 26 points and nine rebounds, Devon Ellis had 20 points, six rebounds and six assists, Elijah Jamison had 17 points and 11 assists for NSU’s first double-double of the season, and Dian Wright-Forde had 16 points.

NSU hit 58 of 84 field-goal tries and had just four turnovers.

Derek Todd led VUL with 20 points.

Virginia Wesleyan 74, Regent 58: The host Marlins (3-1), ranked 15th nationally by d3hoops.com, handled the Royals (2-4) at TowneBank Arena in an all-Hampton Roads clash.

Omari DeVeaux led VWU with 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Amari Moorer had 18 points. Miles Hancock had 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Antoine Brown and Christian Brown scored 12 points each for Regent, and Dorian Tema had 11 points and eight rebounds.Regent closed a halftime gap of 36-26 to 38-34, but a 7-0 run kept the Marlins in command.

Towson 72, Liberty 69: Tyler Tejada scored 20 points, including two free throws in the closing seconds, to help the Tigers (5-2) defeat Liberty (5-1) in the ESPN Events Invitational in Orlando, Florida. Kaden Metheny led the Flames with 16 points.

Towson advanced to Wednesday’s noon championship game on ESPN2 against UC San Diego, which beat Bradley on Tuesday. Liberty will take on the Braves for third place at 2:30 on ESPNU.

George Mason 74, Florida Atlantic 65: Tournament MVP Kory Mincy had 22 points and five assists for the Patriots (7-0) as they won the Sunshine Slam in Daytona Beach, Florida. They’re off to the best start in school history.

Jahari Long scored 21 points, shooting 7 for 11 (4 for 5 from 3-point range) and 3 of 4 from the free-throw line.

Kanaan Carlyle led the Owls (5-2) with 22 points. Devin Vanterpool added 17 points, nine rebounds and five assists for FAU.

James Madison 88, Omaha 77: The Dukes (5-3), who visit George Mason for a 2 p.m. game Saturday, will go in off a 2-0 performance at Florida International’s event in Miami.

JMU sank 17 3-pointers against the Mavericks (2-5) and shot 32 of 58 (.552) from the floor. The Dukes’ 28 assists were their most versus a Division I foe since 2004.

Justin McBride finished with 24 points on 9-of-11 shooting, along with five rebounds. Freshman Preston Fowler came off the bench and had a season-high 18 points, all from beyond the arc. Cliff Davis added 15 points.

Lance Waddles had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead Omaha.

PLAYERS ERA TOURNAMENT

No. 17 Tennessee 76, No. 3 Houston 73: Ja’Kobi Gillespie scored 22 points and made all six of his free throws in the final 35 seconds for the Volunteers in the Players Era event in Las Vegas. They avenged a 69-50 Elite Eight loss last season to eventual runner-up Houston and earned a spot in the third-place game against Kansas at 7 p.m. Eastern Wednesday.

Jaylen Carey — formerly of James Madison and Vanderbilt — added 13 points for the Volunteers (7-0) and Bishop Boswell scored 10, including two free throws with 25 seconds left.

Kingston Flemings led Houston (6-1) with 25 points, and Milos Uzan had 17. Uzan, playing in his hometown, missed a halfcourt shot at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime.

No. 7 Michigan 102, No. 21 Auburn 72: Roddy Gayle Jr. and Yaxel Lendeborg both scored 17 points as the unbeaten Wolverines (6-0) improved to 2-0 in the Players Era event, following a 94-54 win over San Diego State, and clinched a spot in its lucrative championship game against Gonzaga.

Nimari Burnett and Morez Johnson Jr. added 15 points apiece. Trey McKenney finished with 11 and L.J. Cason had 10 for the Wolverines, who shot 51.5% from the field — including 14 of 35 from 3-point range.

Auburn (5-2), which beat Michigan 78-65 in last season’s Sweet 16, was led by Tahaad Pettiford, who scored 16 points. Keyshawn Hall had 15.

No. 8 Alabama 115, UNLV 76: The Crimson Tide (4-2) took control in the first half and breezed past Josh Pastner’s Rebels (3-4) in the Players Era tournament.

Aden Holloway netted 26 points for Alabama in a game that ended after 2 a.m. Eastern time Wednesday. Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn led UNLV with 25.

Alabama will meet Maryland at about 11:59 p.m. Wednesday in a tournament finale on TNT. UNLV will play at 4:30 Thursday against Rutgers on truTV.

No. 12 Gonzaga 100, Maryland 61: Braden Huff scored 20 points on 9-of-10 shooting in a blowout that ensured the Bulldogs (7-0) a spot in the Players Era tournament championship game Wednesday night at 9:30 Eastern on TNT against Michigan.

Emmanuel Innocenti added 15 points off the bench on five 3-pointers for the Bulldogs, who shot 57.8% to Maryland’s 36%. Steele Venters had 14 points, including four 3s, and Graham Ike scored 13. Mario Saint-Supery racked up nine of Gonzaga’s 30 assists on 37 baskets.

Pharrel Payne paced Maryland (5-2) with 14 points, but the Terrapins committed 18 turnovers.

No. 15 Iowa State 78, Creighton 60: Freshman Killyan Toure scored a career-high 20 points as Iowa State (6-0) beat the Bluejays (3-3) in the second round of the Players Era event in Las Vegas.

Despite missing co-leading scorer Tamin Lipsey, who injured his groin in Monday’s 83-82 win over St. John’s, the Cyclones kept Creighton at arm’s length for most of the game.

Kansas 71, Syracuse 60: Tre White had 15 points and 10 rebounds, Flory Bidunga added 13 points and 14 boards, and the Jayhawks (5-2) won at the Players Era tournament. The Orange (4-2), led by Tyler Betsey’s 12 points, were within 52-50 before Kansas scored 11 straight on layups and free throws to pull away.

Syracuse will face Iowa State at 1 p.m. Eastern Wednesday on TNT.

Notre Dame 68, Rutgers 63: Markus Burton had 21 points, five assists and three steals, Jalen Haralson added 15 points and the Irish (5-2) held off the Scarlet Knights (4-3) at the Players Era tourney. Jamichael Davis led Rutgers with 21 points.

Notre Dame will meet Houston at 3:30 p.m. Eastern Wednesday on TNT.

FORT MYERS TIP-OFF

No. 16 North Carolina 85, St. Bonaventure 70: Henri Veesaar scored 24 points and Caleb Wilson added 20 for UNC, which pulled away in the second half at the Fort Myers Tip-Off in southwestern Florida.

Kyan Evans added 11 points and Luka Bogavac 10 for the Tar Heels (6-0), who are off to their best start since 2016-17 but will face Michigan State on Thanksgiving Day. Buddy Simmons II scored 22 for St. Bonaventure (5-1), while Frank Mitchell added 18.

No. 11 Michigan State 89, East Carolina 56: Jaxon Kohler and Divine Ugochukwu each scored 16 points to lead a balanced attack as the Spartans (6-0) beat the Pirates (2-4) in the Fort Myers Tip-Off.

The Spartans had 36 points in the paint, 35 points from its reserves and 31 points off 24 East Carolina turnovers.

MAUI INVITATIONAL

No. 23 NC State 81, Boise State 70: Darrion Williams scored 16 points for the Wolfpack in a Maui Invitational consolation game in Hawaii.

NC State advanced to Wednesday’s fifth-place game at 9:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2 against Texas. After that, Boise State will play Division II Chaminade for seventh place at around 11:59 p.m. on ESPN2.

The Wolfpack bounced back from an 11-point loss to Seton Hall to hand the Broncos (4-3) their second loss in as many days.

Southern California 83, Seton Hall 81: Ezra Ausar and Chad Baker-Mazara combined for 31 second-half points to rally the Trojans (6-0) over the Pirates (6-1) in a Maui Invitational semifinal after losing season-leading scorer Rodney Rice to an injury.

Ausur finished with a season-high 25 points, hitting 15 of 19 free throws, and Baker-Mazara scored 18 for the Trojans. Adam Clark scored 18 and AJ Staton-McCray 17 for the Pirates.

Baker-Mazara put the Trojans up for good with two free throws with 27.4 seconds left. Rice, a former Virginia Tech player, left early in the second half with an apparent upper arm/shoulder injury.

USC will meet Arizona State for the championship at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Wednesday on ESPN, and Seton Hall will face Washington State at 5:30 p.m. on ESPN2 for third place.

Arizona State 100, Washington State 94: Maurice Odum scored 26 points as the Sun Devils (6-1) overcame Washington State (3-4) in a Maui Invitational semifinal despite 40 points from Cougars freshman Ace Glass, who sank 16 of 18 free throws. Odom made five 3-pointers and all nine of his free throws.

No. 25 Indiana 86, Kansas State 69: Reed Bailey scored 21 points and the Hoosiers (6-0) limited the nation’s leading scorer, P.J. Haggerty, to 12 below his average in a home win over Kansas State (5-2).

Bailey hit 13 of 15 free throws. Haggerty, who averaged 28 per game, finished 7 of 17 from the field for 16 points and had six turnovers.

California 80, No. 16 UCLA 72: Chris Bell had 22 points and six rebounds and was named the Most Outstanding Player, former Virginia Cavalier Dai Dai Ames hit two late 3-pointers on the way to 14 points, and Cal (6-1) won the Empire Classic championship game in San Francisco. DJ Campbell, from Kecoughtan High, had four points, two rebounds and two assists for Cal.

With his former NBA star father, Scottie, in the stands, Justin Pippen added 13 points as the Golden Bears earned their first win against a top-25 opponent since 2020.

Trent Perry scored 19 points and Eric Dailey Jr. added 17 for the Bruins (5-2), but UCLA sank just 13 of 23 free throws.

Florida State 89, Cal State Bakersfield 59: Chauncey Wiggins scored 17 points, Martin Somerville made four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points, and FSU (5-1) won in Tallahassee.

Alex Steen had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Seminoles. Ronald Jessamy led the Roadrunners (3-4) with 14 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks.

Wake Forest 99, Campbell 51: Juke Harris scored 17 points and made five 3-pointers, Mekhi Mason had 16 points and nine rebounds, and the Demon Deacons (5-2) won at home over the Camels (3-4). Harris made two 3-pointers during Wake Forest’s 17-0 run that made it 44-16 with 4:49 remaining in the first half.

Chris Fields Jr., who played the previous two seasons for Norfolk State, and Dovydas Butka each scored 12 for Campbell.

East Texas A&M 84, Army 67: Damian Garcia scored 20 points off the bench to lead the Lions (4-3) from Commerce to a win at the Fairleigh Dickinson’s event in Hackensack, New Jersey. Kevin McCarthy had 12 points to lead the Black Knights (1-6).

Women

Texas Tech 67, Old Dominion 42: The Monarchs suffered through a drought on the first day of the Women’s Hoopfest Challenge in Frisco, Texas. They’ll hope to bounce back at noon Thursday against Oregon.

“Tough night of shooting and finding a rhythm suitable for us to make a better game to put on display,” coach DeLisha Milton-Jones said on odusports.com. “Texas Tech’s length bothered us on too many occasions.”

ODU trailed 7-0, 18-6 and 25-7.

Jalynn Bristow led the Red Raiders (8-0) with 18 points. En’Dya Buford had eight for ODU, while Laila Walker finished with six points and eight rebounds. Riley Stack added six rebounds and three blocks.

Nebraska 91, Virginia 82: The Cornhuskers (7-0) won the Emerald Coast Classic’s Beach Bracket championship in Niceville, Florida, despite a stirring UVA comeback.

After trailing by 19 points in the third quarter, the Cavaliers (5-2) matched a program record by shooting 80% in the fourth to pull within four points.

Tournament MVP Britt Prince led the Cornhuskers with a tournament-record 30 points while Amiah Hargrove netted 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds.

Kymora Johnson led UVA with 24 points (15 in the fourth quarter), six rebounds and six assists. All-tournament selection Paris Clark scored 15 points and dished out eight assists, while Romi Levy’s 11 points rounded out a trio of Cavaliers in double figures.

Appalachian State 66, Norfolk State 38: Daisia Mitchell scored 21 points and Feryal Defne Atili added 17 for the Mountaineers (5-2) in Boone, North Carolina.

The Spartans (2-6) have dropped five straight since a 2-1 start, although two of those losses came against Top 25 teams.

Da’Brya Clark scored 14 points off the bench and was the only double-figure scorer for NSU, which shot 26% from the field and 24% (4 of 17) from 3-point range.

App State outrebounded the Spartans 40-25 and shot 45% from the field.

Christopher Newport 83, Averett 37: The Captains (5-2), ranked 19th in the Division III coaches’ poll but out of the d3hoops.com poll, led 27-9 after one quarter and stifled the Cougars (1-4) in Danville.

CNU held Averett to 23.4% shooting and forced 33 turnovers, including 22 steals. Junior Caitlin Crump totaled 15 points, hitting a career-high five 3-pointers, while Hailey Kellogg and Sydney Worsham each had 10 points. Fourteen Captains scored.
