William & Mary pulls out miraculous victory in OT for first road win

BUIES CREEK, N.C. — William & Mary’s first road victory of the football season came in most unlikely fashion, described by longtime Tribe play-by-play broadcaster Jay Colley as a “leap of faith.”

The Tribe erased an 11-point deficit in the final two minutes of regulation, then won 30-27 Saturday at Campbell in overtime when quarterback Tyler Hughes leaped for a game-ending 6-yard touchdown run.

W&M (6-4, 5-2 Coastal Athletic Association), unbeaten at home, had lost its four previous away games and seemed destined to make it five. The struggling Camels (2-8, 2-4) led 24-13 before Rashad Raymond’s 2-yard touchdown run and Hughes’ two-point pass to Haven Mullins.

Down 24-21, the Tribe recovered an onside kick at its 44. A 19-yard co

mpletion to Jackson Blee was part of a nine-play, 40-yard drive that set up Shackford’s 38-yard field goal, forcing overtime at 24-24.

In overtime, Campbell reached the W&M 6, but the Tribe forced the Camels to fourth-and-goal. The Camels kicked a 23-yard field goal for a 27-24 edge.

It didn’t take long for W&M to win. Hughes ran 19 yards to the 6, then jumped to score on the next play. The victory kept the Tribe’s faint FCS playoff hopes alive.

Hughes completed 25 of 37 for 282 yards and carried 21 times for 120 yards, and Raymond had 12 carries for 78 yards. Armon Wright had four catches for 63 yards.

Campbell’s JJ Cowan ran 12 times for 107 yards and two scores. Kamden Sixkiller was 15 of 22 for 136 yards and had 11 carries for 58 yards, but the Camels lost their third game in a row.
