Tribe nears tourney berth in CAA
William & Mary (6-6-4, 4-2-2) took a giant step toward qualifying for the Coastal Athletic Association’s six-team tournament, beating Monmouth 1-0 at Albert-Faly Field.
Ellie Leffler scored from the left side of the box in the 79th minute, assisted by Mia Abbey. The Hawks (10-5-1, 5-3) were outshot 14-4.
If W&M hasn’t qualified already, the Tribe can advance to the tournament with a victory next Sunday over Hampton. The Tribe is second to UNC Wilmington in the South Division, whose top three teams will advance.
Meanwhile, Hampton (5-10-1, 0-7 CAA) fell 2-1 on its Senior Day to Northeastern (3-8-5, 2-4-2) at Powhatan Field in Norfolk.
Just 37 seconds after Lughano Nyondo’s goal put the Huskies on top, HU’s Jayda Sutton netted a free kick from just outside the box to the score at 1 in the 55th minute. Northeastern won on Ava Gialanella’s goal in the 78th.
No. 13 CNU defeats No. 12 Swarthmore
Christopher Newport (11-1-2), ranked 13th in Division III, registered a 2-1 home victory over No. 12 Swarthmore (11-2-2) before 618.
Bella DiTommaso netted a free kick from just inside 40 yards to give the Captains a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. Macie Mangini leveled the score with a header in the 53rd, but Hanna Heaton’s 18-yard blast off a DiTommaso assist in the 73rd proved decisive. Goalkeeper Amy Sidaway made three saves for the victory.

UVA again handles Hokies
Reagan Ennist had 15 kills as Virginia swept Virginia Tech 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-20) at John Paul Jones Arena, the second victory by the Cavaliers (10-8, 3-5 ACC) over the Hokies (9-10, 1-7) in less than a week.

No. 3 UVA blanks W&M
No. 3 Virginia (11-1) breezed past William & Mary 5-0 in Williamsburg, scoring four goals in the third quarter. Alexandra de Jesus had 14 saves for the Tribe (1-12) as UVA outshot W&M 25-5.
Catalina Quinteros scored twice and fellow reserve Riley Savage had two assists for the Cavaliers.

UVA takes numerous semifinal spots in region
The Virginia Cavaliers earned most of the semifinal berths, including all four in singles, in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Atlantic Regional in Blacksburg.
Top-seeded Annabelle Xu and Katie Rolls advanced to an all-UVA singles semifinal, and No. 3 Vivian Yang will face No.6 Martina Genis Salas in the other. The semifinal winners will earn bids to the NCAA singles championship tournament in November near Orlando, Florida.
In doubles, the semifinals will pit No. 5 seeds Margaret Navarro and Isabelle Lacy of UVA against No. 3 Emma Ghirardato and Ema Kovacevic of Maryland, and UVA’s Rolls and Blair Gill against a pair to be determined. The doubles champions will capture NCAA berths.
Singles players who advanced to the round of 16 included Old Dominion teammates Kira Matushkina, Ulyana Romanova and Victoria Matasova, plus Bayside High graduate Laima Frosch of Virginia Tech. First-round winners who fell in the round of 32 included W&M’s Francesca Davis and ODU’s Marina Markina.

Early crash ends Queen’s Xfinity day
Brenden “Butterbean” Queen suffered a rare low finish Saturday. In his third NASCAR Xfinity Series race of the year, he ended up 36th among 38 drivers Saturday after being caught up in a 10-car crash on the 15th lap at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama.
Queen, a 27-year-old from Chesapeake who won the ARCA Menards Series title this year, will drive in the season’s final two Xfinity races of 2025 before going full-time in the NASCAR Truck Series next season.
