W&M linebacker Luke Banbury named FCS Nation Defensive Player of Week

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

William & Mary linebacker Luke Banbury has been named the FCS Nation Defensive Player of the Week.

The graduate student from Pittsburgh collected 16 tackles, including nine solo stops, and three pass breakups in the Tribe’s 28-27 victory over Maine on Saturday in Williamsburg.

Banbury has 30 tackles on the season and ranks third in the FCS.

BASKETBALL

Tribe’s Gabe Dorsey to play in Slovakia

William & Mary graduate Gabe Dorsey recently became the third Tribe player from last season to sign a professional contract.

Dorsey signed with the two-time defending Slovakian League champions Patrioti Levice.

The 6-6 wing player joins his brother, Caleb, in Slovakia’s top division. Caleb Dorsey signed with BC Komarno in July.

Matteus Case was the third W&M player from last season to sign a professional contract, going to Vitória S.C. in Portugal.

Gabe Dorsey led the Tribe in scoring each of the past two seasons, averaging 13.4 points last season and 14 points in 2023-24. He finished with 1,164 career points, which ranks 26th in program history, and averaged a program-best 3.24 3-pointers made per game.

HU’s Lewis to serve on committee

Hampton University basketball player Kellan Lewis has been selected as the Coastal Athletic Association’s representative on the NCAA DI Basketball Oversight Committee.

The 6-0 redshirt freshman guard from Orlando, Florida, is a Dean’s List student majoring in architecture.

The men’s and women’s basketball oversight committees voted to change their structure to give men’s and women’s basketball players increased opportunities for providing feedback to the committees.

ODU women add Ward as trainer

The Old Dominion women’s basketball program has announced that Janay Ward will join the staff as athletic trainer.

Ward was previously an athletic trainer at Maryland Baltimore County, where she worked with the men’s soccer team and cross country and track and field teams. Before that, she was an athletic trainer at Georgia Tech for the cross country and track and field teams.

The Waldorf, Maryland, native is a Towson graduate with a masters in athletic training.

ODU’s Mullen earns Sun Belt honor

Old Dominion women’s soccer player Riley Mullen has been named the Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week.

The junior midfielder from Staten Island, New York, scored the opening goal in ODU’s 2-1 victory over No. 20 Virginia Tech and then scored both goals in the Monarchs’ 2-1 victory over in-state rival VCU.

ODU is 4-1-1 heading into its Sun Belt opener against App State at 6 p.m. Saturday at the ODU Soccer Stadium.

HOCKEY

Admirals sign defenseman Magnuson

The Norfolk Admirals have signed defenseman Will Magnuson to an ECHL contract for the upcoming season.

Magnuson, 23, is set to join the Admirals for his first season as a professional. The Chaska, Minnesota, native completed his four-year collegiate career at Bemidji State, posting 18 points (two goals, 16 assists) in 136 career games. He made the CCHA All-Academic Team all four seasons.

“Will Magnuson is a Connor Fedorek-style player that will block shots, stand up for teammates and be a rugged piece to our back end,” said Admirals head coach and general manager Jeff Carr.

Magnuson becomes the sixth defenseman to sign with the Admirals, joining Carson Musser, Josh McDougall, Connor Fedorek, Jaden Shields and Brehdan Engum.
