W&M men get strong bench play, top UTEP in Florida tournament

Kyle Pulliam and Reese Miller scored 16 points apiece and William & Mary shot 49% from the field in a 74-63 victory over UTEP in its first game at the Jacksonville Classic on Monday.

It was the third straight win for the Tribe (5-2), which got 33 points from its bench. Ten W&M players saw action.

Chase Lowe added nine points for the Tribe, which jumped out to a 13-0 lead and led 35-23 at the half.

The Miners (3-3) trimmed their deficit to one at 50-49 on Kaseem Watson’s layup with 10:46 left, but W&M never relinquished its lead.

The Tribe will play Abilene Christian at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to conclude the tournament.

Seton Hall 85, No. 23 North Carolina State 74: A.J. Staton-McCray scored 22 points to lead Seton Hall to a win over North Carolina State in a Maui Invitational quarterfinal.

The Pirates (6-0) led the Wolfpack (4-1) for all but the first three minutes, going up by as many as 18 points.

Ven-Allen Lubin scored 16 points with nine rebounds to lead N.C. State. Seton Hall held Darrion Williams, the ACC Preseason Player of the Year, to 12 points.

No. 20 Tennessee 85, Rutgers 60: Ja’Kobi Gillespie scored 32 points and Nate Ament added 20 to help Tennessee (6-0) defeat Rutgers (4-2) on the first day of the Players Era tournament in Las Vegas.

Gillespie made six 3-pointers in the game. Felix Okpara and J.P. Estrella each scored 10 points, while Okpara and Cade Phillips had seven rebounds apiece.

For Rutgers, freshman Harun Zarno led the way with 14 points.

No. 3 Connecticut 72, Bryant 49 (late Sunday): Silas Demary Jr. had 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for the Huskies (5-1) in Hartford, and Eric Reibe led UConn with 16 points. Timofei Rudovskii paced Bryant (1-5) with 11.

ACC

Kansas 71, Notre Dame 61: Flory Bidunga had 18 points, nine rebounds, five assists and five blocks, Bryson Tiller added 17 points and nine boards and Kansas beat Notre Dame in the Players Era Tournament for its first power-conference victory of the season.

Tre White chipped in with 16 points and nine rebounds for Kansas (4-2), which was coming off a 78-66 loss to then-No. 5 Duke in the Champions Classic.

Markus Burton led Notre Dame (4-2) with 24 points.

Tulane 93, Boston College 90, OT: Curtis Williams Jr. scored a career-high 32 points and Rowan Brumbaugh added 27 for the Green Wave in the consolation game of the Charleston Classic’s Lowcountry Bracket on Sunday night.

Landstown High graduate Donald Hand Jr. scored 26 for BC (3-4).

State

Liberty 79, Vermont 73: Brett Decker Jr. hit five 3-pointers and finished with 23 points as Liberty defeated Vermont in the ESPN Events Invitational’s Adventure Bracket.

Zach Cleveland and Kaden Metheny each added 14 points for the Flames (5-0).

Buffalo 78, VMI 70: Daniel Freitag scored 17 points, going 14 of 16 from the line, as Buffalo (6-0) topped VMI (3-5) in the Fort Myers Tip-Off.

TJ Johnson paced the Keydets with a game-high 28 points.

Top 10 women

No. 1 Connecticut 93, Utah 41: Azzi Fudd had 24 points and a career-high eight rebounds in three quarters as UConn (8-0) dusted Utah (3-3) on Sunday night and finished as the only undefeated team in the Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase.
