Woman hit by vehicle driven by teen while crossing street in Meriden

A woman is hospitalized after she was struck by a vehicle while she was crossing the street in Meriden on Thursday afternoon.

The Meriden Emergency Communications Center received a report of a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian at the intersection of East Main Street and Swain Avenue around 1:16 p.m. on Wednesday, according to the Meriden Police Department.

Arriving officers located a 62-year-old woman lying in the road with injuries to her head and lower extremities, police said. The woman was treated on scene by the Meriden Fire Department, Hunters EMS, Meriden patrol officers and a good Samaritan. According to police, she was transported to an area hospital with injuries which were later deemed “serious but not life-threatening.”

An initial investigation determined that the woman was walking westbound across Swain Avenue in the crosswalk. According to police, the walk signal was not active at the time.

A 17-year-old male driver was stopped at a red light on Swain Avenue waiting to turn right onto East Main Street. Police allege that the woman was directly in front of his Kia Sorento when he accelerated to complete the right turn and failed to notice her in his path, striking her with his vehicle, knocking her to the ground and running her over.

No other injuries were reported, and all parties were cooperating with police.

The incident remains under investigation by the Meriden Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit. Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Joseph Golden or Sgt. Adam Kery at 203-630-6201 or by email at jgolden@meridenct.gov or akery@meridenct.gov.
