Woman injured in Hollywood beach apartment fire dies, fire rescue says

A woman who was hospitalized after a top-floor unit in a Hollywood beach apartment building caught fire died from her injuries Thursday morning, two days after the blaze, a Hollywood Fire Rescue official said.

The fire engulfed a penthouse apartment at the top of a building in the 300 block of North Surf Road on Tuesday evening. Live video from WPLG-Ch. 10 showed flames spreading through the windows and the rear sliding glass doors toward the balcony of the corner unit situated beneath the building’s rooftop pool.

The woman, who was described as elderly, a firefighter and a police officer were taken to hospitals for evaluation, Hollywood Fire Rescue spokesperson Chai Kauffman said Tuesday evening. The man who lived in the apartment unit that caught fire was not home at the time and was not injured.

Details about how the woman was injured, her cause of death and preliminary information about the origin of the fire had not been released as of Thursday afternoon.
