Woman missing after going for swim at Jersey Shore, search underway

A swimmer went missing after going for a swim at the Jersey Shore early Thursday morning, prompting Cape May City authorities to launch a multi-agency search-and-rescue operation in the area of Madison and Beach avenues, officials said.

The swimmer, described as a woman with dark hair between the ages of 30 and 40, entered the water shortly after 7 a.m., the city’s office of emergency management said in a statement shared on Facebook late Thursday morning.

“We will remain on location with our resources, which include the New Jersey State Police Marine Boats, United States Coast Guard Small Boat Station and the United States Coast Guard Fire Department,” city officials said.

In a separate social media post, officials announced that the Cape May Beach Patrol would be flying “double red” flags in the area until further notice — indicating that swimmers are not allowed to enter the water “due to high surf and dangerous rip currents.”

No additional information was available as of 1 p.m. Thursday.

Earlier this week, a swimmer drowned at another Jersey Shore beach, officials said. The 39-year-old was pulled from the ocean at a Lavallette beach Tuesday afternoon and taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly afterward.
