One driver is dead and another sent to the hospital after a wrong-way crash on U.S. Highway 27 in Lake County early Sunday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at 1:54 a.m. north of Frank Jarrell Road on the stretch of U.S. 27 between State Road 50 and U.S. Highway 192 south of Clermont, according to an FHP report.
A 27-year-old Windermere man was driving a 2019 Audi Q5 southbound at a high rate of speed, according to a witness. The witness told FHP the Audi began traveling the wrong way in the northbound lanes of the highway.
The Audi then collided head-on with a 2021 Toyota Camry driven by 28-year-old Orlando man, the report stated.
The Camry driver was pronounced dead on the scene while the Audi driver was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.
The crash remains under investigation.
