Zach Leite hit two home runs, including a grand slam, to account for all of Old Dominion’s scoring in its 5-4 victory over Niagara on Friday at Ellmer Family Baseball Complex.
Starting pitcher Darin Kuskie (2-0) gave up all four runs (three earned) on five hits in six innings with four strikeouts and one walk for the Monarchs (3-2). Relievers Jayce Park and Kellen Davis combined for three scoreless innings, with Davis earning his first save.
Curtis McKay hit a two-run homer and finished with two RBIs for the Purple Eagles (0-4).
Leite hit a solo shot in the second inning to tie the game at 1 and belted his grand slam with two out in the third to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 lead. Macaddin Dye hit a leadoff single, Scotty Young reached on an error and TJ Aiken was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Leite and Dye finished with two hits each.
The teams are set to play again at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Christopher Newport 21, Marietta 20 (10 innings): Brayden Mazzoni hit a walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the 10th inning to rally the Captains (4-1) to a wild victory in the D3 Showcase tournament in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Jake Benedict had three hits, including a grand slam, and six RBIs and Aaron Maxie had three hits, including a three-run homer, and five RBIs for CNU.
The Captains used an eight-run bottom of the eighth inning to turn a 17-10 deficit into an 18-17 lead. Benedict hit a two-run single to start the rally.
CNU trailed 20-18 heading to the bottom of the 10th, but Ashton Hylton hit a two-run single before Mazonni’s game-winner.
Captains reliever Alex Shelkin (1-0) picked up the victory despite allowing three runs in two innings.
CNU will face No. 13 Cortland at 11 a.m. Saturday in the tournament.
No. 2 Denison 13, Christopher Newport 4: Cade Nowik had two hits and four RBIs and Will Rettig pitched five solid innings for the victory as Denison rolled past the Captains in an earlier game Friday.
Erik Sundgren and Jack Rollo added two hits and three runs each and Bobby Haarde hit a two-run homer for the Big Red in their season opener.
Rettig (1-0) gave up two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
Josh Reinhold led CNU with three hits, two RBIs and a stolen base. Jacob Koenig drove in the team’s other two runs.
Captains starter Jackson Baird (0-1) allowed five runs in three innings.
Virginia 21, Monmouth 8: The Cavaliers continued their offensive onslaught this season by surpassing 20 runs for the third time in five games with a rout of Monmouth in DeLand, Florida.
Noah Murray, Sam Harris and AJ Gracia each hit two homers to power UVA’s 23-hit attack. Murray finished with three hits and six RBIs, while Harris had four hits and five RBIs and Gracia had four hits and three RBIs.
Harrison Didawick (Western Branch) went 4 for 6 with two RBIs and three runs and Joe Tiroly added three hits and three runs for the Cavaliers (5-0), who scored 11 runs in the eighth inning.
UVA’s third pitcher, Kevin Jaxel (1-0), picked up the victory with 1 2/3 hitless innings.
Wyatt Hunt had two hits and two RBIs for Monmouth (1-3).
The Cavaliers will play Stetson at 5 p.m. Saturday.
Binghamton 9, William & Mary 8: Tim Hennig hit a go-ahead grand slam in the top of the seventh inning to help the Bearcats (1-3) spoil the Tribe’s home opener.
Matthew Kosuda hit a homer and drove in three runs, Charlie Iriotakis added a two-run shot and Jamie Laskofski went 3 for 5 with an RBI and two runs for W&M (0-4).
Tommy Popoff went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Matt Bolton went 3 for 6 with a run for Binghamton.
The teams will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday.
Virginia Wesleyan 8, SUNY New Paltz 4: Brandon Drewry pitched six strong innings for his second victory and James Tassone drove in four runs as the Marlins won at Perry Field in Virginia Beach.
Drewry (2-0) allowed one run on four hits with two strikeouts and four walks.
VWU broke open a 1-1 game with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Gino Meienschein and Nick Valentin each hit two-run homers and Tassone capped it with an RBI double.
Tassone, Meienschein and Nathan Bryant each had two hits.
The teams are set to play a doubleheader Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m.
