Five Central Florida restaurants shut down the week of Aug. 24-30, according to data from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.
Orange
Chili Spot at 4646 S. Kirkman Road in Orlando shut down on Aug. 25. Inspectors found 36 violations, five of which were a high priority. Those violations included an employee touching ready-to-eat food with their bare hands, roach activity, roach excrement and a missing vacuum breaker. A second inspection occurred on Aug. 27. Inspectors found 23 violations, one of which was a high priority for a missing vacuum breaker. Officials offered a time extension for the violation. The restaurant met inspection standards.
Jerkman BBQ at 9401 W. Colonial Dr. in Ocoee shut down on Aug. 27. Inspectors found nine violations, two of which were high priorities for roach activity and food held at the wrong temperatures. A second inspection occurred on the same day. The roach issue was corrected on-site and the restaurant received a time extension for the temperature problem. The restaurant requires a follow-up inspection, but is no longer an immediate threat to the public.
Seminole
5th Element Indian Restaurant at 1133 Rinehart Road in Sanford shut down on Aug. 28. Inspectors found 41 violations, nine of which were high priorities. Those priorities included an employee working without first washing their hands, roach activity, an improperly stored toxic substance and storing utensils in unclean water. A second inspection occurred on Aug. 29. Inspectors found 18 violations, but none was a high priority. A follow-up inspection is required, but the restaurant doesn’t pose an immediate threat to the public.
Brevard
Mimmo’s Pizzeria & Ristorante of Cocoa Beach at 3 N. Atlantic Ave. in Cocoa Beach shut down on Aug. 26. Inspectors found 23 violations, eight of which were high priorities. Those violations included raw food not separated from ready-to-eat food, rodent activity and an improperly stored toxic substance. A second inspection occurred on Aug. 27. Officials found 11 violations and the restaurant didn’t comply with the emergency order. On Aug. 28, there are three reports for visits.
On the first visit, there were three violations, all of which were high priorities, for selling food after being shut down, removing the sign of being shut down and operating with a suspended license. A second notation marked the restaurant still hadn’t complied with the order, but there were only two high-priority violations. A third and final entry had zero violations, as the restaurant fully complied with the emergency order.
Island Hotel of Space Coast at 260 E. Merritt Island Causeway in Merritt Island shut down on Aug. 26. Inspectors found five violations, two of which were high priorities for rodent activity. A second inspection on Aug. 27 found two violations and the restaurant remained closed. On the final inspection, there was only one violation, but it wasn’t a high priority. The restaurant met inspection standards.
Complaints and warnings
Orange County had the top spot for most warnings and other complaints in Central Florida, with 40.
Volusia had 13, Brevard had 14, Lake had 10, Seminole had eight and Osceola had three.
