DeSantis: Florida’s Hurricane Ian recovery will be ’24/7 operation’

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis gave an update on relief and recovery efforts following Hurricane Ian on Thursday, saying it was a “24/7 operation.”

The storm made landfall Wednesday morning as a Category 4 hurricane with 150 mph winds laying waste to infrastructure in southwest Florida. Images of the aftermath show buckled roads, collapsed bridges and flooded neighborhoods.

“From the wee hours of the morning there have been people that have descended on southwest Florida to be able to offer assistance,” DeSantis said Thursday. “And so we’ve seen a number of efforts on the barrier islands to bring people to safety, particularly in Lee County, but also in Charlotte and in Naples, and Collier County. And you have people, the electrical power, they’re all here.”

“And so we’ve got a huge amount of resources that have been brought to bear to be able to do that. And we’re going to continue doing it. This is going to be a 24/7 operation because we realize how important it is,” he continued.

LIVE UPDATES: HURRICANE IAN ROARS TO CATEGORY 4 STRENGTH, FLORIDA OFFICIALS WARN RESIDENTS TO BE CAUTIOUS

DeSantis went on to say that the state has set up several ways for Americans to contribute to the relief and recovery efforts, though he cautioned against sending actual supplies.

He said those interested should go to FloridaDisasterFund.org.

Roughly 2.5 million people are without power following the storm.

Hurricane Ian weakened into a tropical storm as it crossed Florida, but it first struck as a powerful Category 4 hurricane. It is now expected to approach the South Carolina coast, where hurricane warnings have been issued.

Ian tied for the fourth-strongest landfalling hurricane to strike Florida since data started being recorded.

Toy gun mistaken for real one prompts police response at Pennsylvania high school

Police responded to a high school in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, on Wednesday after someone mistook a toy gun for a real one and called 911.

Officials said someone told a school crossing guard while school was dismissing at approximately 3:30 p.m. that they saw someone with a gun in the parking lot of Ridley High School in Folsom, Pennsylvania, which is a suburb of Philadelphia.

When the crossing guard called 911, police responded to the report as school officials took measures to secure the property. Authorities said that once police arrived on the scene, the school property was secure.

Police later discovered three people, none of whom was a current student, sitting in a car with a toy gun in the parking lot at the varsity baseball field and tennis courts. As police handled the situation, students and staff who remained were released for the day.

12-YEAR-OLD SUSPENDED AFTER TEACHER SPOTS TOY GUN DURING VIRTUAL CLASS

“Only the high school was temporarily impacted by the incident,” the Ridley Township Police Department said in a statement. “The subjects were arrested, and charges are pending.”

Ridley Police have not released any information regarding the charges for the three individuals involved, and they did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

PHILLY DA INSISTS HIS CRIME POLICIES ARE ‘WORKING’ DESPITE 1,000 KILLINGS, REFUSES TO RESIGN

“There is no update from the information the district shared yesterday, as it was dealt with by the police,” Ridley superintendent Lee Ann Wetzel told Fox News Digital. “The difficulty for communities is that there are ‘toys’ that look like real weapons.”

In 2020, a 12-year-old boy named Isaiah Elliot, in Colorado, received a five-day suspension for flashing a toy gun across his computer screen during an online art class.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said at the time that while the teacher thought it was a toy gun, authorities still did a welfare check on Elliott without parental notification.

Biden: FEMA’s response to Hurricane Ian is ‘reinforcing’ faith in government

President Joe Biden on Thursday praised the Federal Emergency Management Agency for its response to Hurricane Ian, telling the room full of FEMA workers that they’re restoring Americans’ faith in their government.

Biden stopped to speak to the workers after attending a FEMA briefing on the hurricane’s devastation in Florida. He said over the past six to 10 years, faith in government institutions has been eroding.

“You are reinforcing people’s faith in institutions,” Biden said at the FEMA headquarters. “Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Restoring trust in government and its institutions has long been a pillar of the Biden’s agenda, and was a focal point of his campaign for president as he challenged Donald Trump in 2020. During Biden’s first year in office, he signed an executive order aimed at this priority, making it easier for Americans to renew passports, apply for Social Security and receive aid after facing natural disasters — the idea being to put public interest and customer service at the center of government operations.

The public’s trust in government has remained low through much of the 21st Century. But the data is approaching a new all-time low, according to the latest research from Pew Research Center that found that just 20 percent of Americans feel that “they trust the government in Washington to do the right thing just about always or most of the time.”

During Thursday’s speech, Biden thanked FEMA again and other federal employees for their emergency response.

“I’ve seen you in action all across the country from the West coast of the Northwest and the Northeast, down in Louisiana, all across this country,” Biden said. “And just in the last two weeks, you’ve been working 24/7. No matter what, when emergencies happen, FEMA is always there. You deserve the nation’s gratitude and full support.”

Asked Thursday about his calls with GOP Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Biden brushed off the divergent politics and rhetorical sparring between the two men that have escalated in recent weeks ahead of November’s midterm elections. Already Biden has issued a disaster declaration in the state, which will provide Florida with federal aid to supplement state, local and tribal recovery efforts in impacted areas. The president also said he will travel to Florida when conditions allow.

“This is not about anything having to do with our disagreements politically. This is about saving people’s lives, homes and businesses,” he said. “That’s what this is about.”

Democrat Supporters Accused Of Attacking Republicans At AOC ‘Squad’ Event In Boston

Democrat Supporters Accused Of Attacking Republicans At AOC ‘Squad’ Event In Boston

Authored by Alice Giordano via The Epoch Times (emphasis ours),

Just days after a North Dakota man admitted to killing an 18-year-old because he was a Republican, supporters of the ultra-progressive Democratic group known as The Squad, attacked a group of Republicans holding a vigil in Boston on Sept. 24.

The attack, which appears to be unprovoked, was caught on video and released to The Epoch Times.

One of the men attacked was Donnie Palmer, the Republican nominee looking to unseat U.S. Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, a member of The Squad.

Pressley, along with Congresswomen Alexandria Oscar-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Cori Bush of Missouri—all of whom make up The Squad—were holding a sold-out event inside the Somerville Theatre when some of their supporters allegedly attacked Palmer and other men with him.

At least one of the men was hospitalized from the injuries he sustained from the attack and can be seen in the video laying on the ground and bleeding.

These people are despicable and they are terrorists,” said Palmer, who accused Pressley of sending the men “to shut us up.”

Pressley’s office did not return multiple phone calls made by The Epoch Times about the incident.

Palmer said he is outraged that no one in the Democratic party or liberal media is talking about the death of 18-year-old Cayler Ellingson, killed last week by 41-year-old Shannon Brandt.

According to police reports, Brandt admitted to killing Ellingson after deciding he was a member of a “Republican extremist group.”

Brandt, who admitted to getting in his car, seeking out Ellingson, and then running over him, told police he was afraid the 18-year-old was coming to get him.

“If this was a black kid killed by a white cop it would be all over the news,” said Palmer, who is black.

The violence against Palmer and the others broke out as Dr Ibram Kendi, author of the book “How to Be an Antiracist” was hosting The Squad event.

Jim Lyons, chairman of the Massachusetts Republican Party attended the vigil for Ellingson earlier in the day. He told The Epoch Times that he is outraged by the double standards behind the way Ellingson’s death is being handled.

Shortly after admitting to killing Ellingson, Brandt was released on bail.

“It is an absolute outrage that the people on Jan. 6 are still in jail and this man is already free,” said Lyons, referring to people arrested last year outside the Capitol in what Democrats refer to as the “Insurrection.”
