Brother-in-law to be arrested in Lake woman’s killing, deputies say

The brother-in-law of a slain Lake woman will soon be arrested in her killing, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced Tuesday.

Monica Islam, 44, of Eustis, was found dead May 2 at the intersection of Wolf Branch Road and Scenic Hills Drive in Mount Dora. Detectives and prosecutors have now obtained an arrest warrant in the case for Shahidul Islam of Longwood, the brother of Monica’s husband Rashedul, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

An investigation found Monica had been the victim of domestic violence by the two brothers in December, when Rashedul allegedly struck Monica and stole jewelry, as well as paperwork for a property in Bangladesh that was being disputed between the couple. Shahidul allegedly pointed a gun at Monica, telling her not to call 911 during the incident, the release said.

Eustis police obtained an arrest warrant in that incident, but Rashedul fled the country before it could be served, according to the sheriff’s office.

Detectives learned Shahidul had been previously deported and had an active federal immigration warrant after again illegally re-entering the United States. They obtained vehicle information from license plate readers that led them to connect Shahidul to a home in Sanford, according to the release.

Further investigation revealed Shahidul fled Sanford just after Monica’s killing and headed to New York in a rental car, the sheriff’s office said. The U.S. Marshals Service was requested to assist in locating him. He was apprehended May 6 on the federal immigration warrant and has remained in federal custody.

The sheriff’s office said Shahidul will be served the arrest warrant and extradited to Lake County County once all federal requirements related to his immigration status have been satisfied.
