The Connecticut State Police responded to 282 crashes over Labor Day weekend with one fatality and two involving serious injuries.
A head-on collision on Route 66 in Middlefield late Friday night resulted in the death of 46-year-old Venancio Papalotzi-George of Meriden, who was pronounced dead at the scene just after midnight.
According to state police, Papalotzi-George’s 2012 Honda Civic collided head-on into a 2009 Jeep Wrangler late Friday night before rolling over on its roof and catching on fire.
A Voluntown crash involving a motorcycle and a dirt bike sent two men to the hospital on Sunday, one with serious injuries, state police said. According to state police, a Harley-Davidson was traveling southbound on Preston City Road when it approached a group of dirt bikes from behind, collided with an Acerbis 150 XC-W then struck an embankment
The Harley-Davidson operator, identified as a 58-year-old man from Sterling, was transported by Life Star to Rhode Island Hospital, state police said.
On Sunday night, Life Star was called to an ATV crash in Stafford. According to state police, the crash happened just after 10 p.m. near 100 Chaffee Road. State police said the extent of injuries was unknown at the time.
The traffic statistics, which started at midnight on Friday and ended at 11:59 p.m., on Monday, included a total of 4,288 calls for service, according to state police.
Troopers made 891 traffic stops and 35 DUI arrests, state police said.
State police also responded to 318 traffic services, which include things such as debris removal and assisting with disabled or hazardous motor vehicles.
