Did Broward sheriff break the law? | Letters to the editor

Florida Statute 316.2045 makes it illegal to “willfully obstruct the free, convenient, and normal use of any public street, highway, or road.”

City of Deerfield Beach

A BSO squad car blocks traffic in Deerfield Beach on Aug. 27, 2025.

The blockade of State Road A1A by the Broward Sheriff’s Office was an illegal act because there was no valid justification for it. This was a vivid display of what can happen when those entrusted to uphold the law defiantly break the law.

It’s another example of our slide toward authoritarian government.

Savoring the printed word

I’m in my “young” 80s and I enjoy perusing the newspaper while sipping my coffee in the morning. It’s tactile (I’ve been a subscriber since the 1970s).

Although the cost of the newspaper has increased considerably, I think of it as my donation to receiving real news and local content.

I also read the digital version occasionally, but there’s nothing like print on paper to keep one grounded. I hope the Sun Sentinel does not go the way of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution — about which I recently read with some apprehension.

Keep up the good work. You are appreciated.

Carol Lansdale, Pompano Beach

(Editor’s Note: The Atlanta paper announced that it will permanently end all print publication on Dec. 31. It will be available only online.)

Giving ICE some love

Like many, I find it difficult to read about much of what’s happening since Trump took office. I am ashamed to digest news about how low we have sunk regarding honesty, kindness, fairness, intellect and many other traits I once attributed to the majority of our citizens.

However, I thoroughly enjoyed the Opinion essay by Adam Schwartz (“Six reasons to show ICE some love,” Aug. 26).

At first, I was hesitant to read it, because I was afraid that it was a serious piece in support of the horrific things being done by ICE. I’m glad I took a risk and read it.

It’s rare than something on the Opinion page makes me smile. But this piece did. Thank you for running it.

Penny Morey, Boca Raton

Wishing and hoping

Just a note of thanks to you for Adam Schwartz’s Opinion article.

At first glance I was dismayed by the headline, but I quickly understood it was satire. It was funny and made me smile, but sadly it was also truthful.

I’m appalled at what’s happening to America and to Americans by this administration. I hope we can survive and become a beacon of hope again.

John Smith, Fort Lauderdale

Unlimited depravity

Is there no limit to the depravity of the Republican Party and in particular Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier? He wants the U.S. Supreme Court to strike down the state law banning people under age 21 from buying assault weapons and other long guns.

The law was passed in response to the Parkland tragedy, which still leaves scars on our community, especially the families of the slain and the survivors living with a lifetime of trauma.

Aren’t there enough guns in this country? When will this carnage stop?

I understand this is in defense of the Second Amendment. But what about life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? The phrase captures the idea that everyone is entitled to live freely, to make their own choices and strive for a fulfilling life, as long as they don’t infringe on the rights of others.

Does the right to own a semi-automatic weapon supersede the right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness? For the sake of your three children, James Uthmeier, and all others, please withdraw your request.

Jack Miller, Parkland
