Evergreen Park man charged with robbery of armored truck connected to Loop shooting

An Evergreen Park man has been accused of robbery affecting interstate commerce in connection to the attempted robbery of an armored truck driver in Chicago’s Loop Wednesday, an incident that ended with the driver of that vehicle shooting the man.

Dajon Harris, 23, was charged in a criminal complaint filed Friday of obstructing, delaying and affecting the movement of articles and commodities in commerce by robbery and, as part of those robbery plans, committing and threatening physical violence.

The complaint alleges that at around 11:17 a.m., Harris robbed a Brinks armored truck driver who was near 6 S. State St. The driver was walking outside of a Saks Off 5th store with a black Brinks bag carrying eight clear bags of cash when Harris approached him, according to the complaint and a police report.

Harris grabbed the bag of cash with both hands and attempted to rip it out of the driver’s hands, the complaint alleged. As the driver and Harris struggled over control of the bag, Harris began punching the driver, the complaint alleged. At some point during the struggle, the driver unholstered his firearm and discharged three rounds at Harris, per the complaint.

Brinks records show that Harris took around $6,484.42 from the driver, the complaint stated. Surveillance footage and reports from law enforcement show Harris fled north on foot on State Street then west on Madison Street, where he ultimately dropped the Brinks bag. Authorities recovered the bag dropped on Madison as well as one other clear bag of cash found nearby on the sidewalk, the complaint stated.

Of the eight clear bags of cash taken by Harris, seven were recovered by authorities in Harris’ flight path, the complaint stated.

Minutes after the robbery, Harris encountered authorities near the Washington Blue Line CTA Station, according to the complaint. He was found by Chicago Police officers with multiple gunshot wounds, according to a statement from the department. Harries was taken to Northwestern Hospital in good condition, officials said.
