Firefighters put out a fire at a home in Westport on Thursday night that prompted mutual aid.
Crews responded to the home on Weathervane Hill on the report of a structure fire just before 11 p.m. and found heavy smoke from the rear of the house, according to Assistant Chief Brett Kirby of the Westport Fire Department.
Firefighters found that everyone in the house had gotten out safely before additional crews arrived and began attacking the fire through the front of the home, Kirby said. The flames began extending “rapidly” throughout the first floor, Kirby said.

Crews entered the home despite “very heavy” fire conditions and were able to control the heaviest part of the fire through a coordinated, aggressive attack, according to Kirby. Additional firefighters in the rear of the home helped control flames that were extending to the second floor. Crews were faced with “extremely icy conditions” at the scene, according to Kirby.
Firefighters put out the main fire and searched the home for hot spots, Kirby said.
The Norwalk Fire Department responded to the scene as a Rapid Intervention Team, according to Kirby. Crews with the Fairfield and Wilton Fire Department provided mutual aid station coverage.
Fire crews were at the scene for about five hours.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Westport Fire Marshals Office.
