No. 5 Mary Washington shoots 63% in rout of No. 12 Virginia Wesleyan

No. 12 Virginia Wesleyan had an opportunity to post a signature victory Tuesday, but ran into a buzzsaw in No. 5 Mary Washington.

Kye Robinson scored 29 points on 10-of-13 shooting, and the Eagles shot 63% from the field to ease past the Marlins 89-48 in a men’s basketball game at Ron Rosner Arena in Fredericksburg.

Ulysses Young added 20 points and Jay Randall had 11 for Mary Washington (11-1), which also shot 47.1% from beyond the 3-point arc.

Amari Moorer was the lone double-figure scorer for the Marlins (7-3) with 12 points.

VWU shot 33.3% from the field and 30% from beyond the arc.

Christopher Newport 68, Rochester Institute of Technology 59: CNU (11-3) earned its 10th victory in 11 games, fending off the Tigers (3-5) from New York state at the Captains Shootout before 492 at Freeman Center. CNU led 49-33 in rebounding.

Collin Hines had 17 points, nine rebounds and seven assists for CNU, which led for the final 23 minutes. Tyson Henderson had 15 points, Ethan Ward had 12 points, and junior Ryan Derderian posted career highs of 12 points and 16 rebounds.

The Tigers are in their second year under former CNU assistant Dom Parker as head coach.

No. 12 North Carolina 79, Florida State 66: Caleb Wilson had 22 points, 16 rebounds and six assists in Chapel Hill for the Tar Heels (13-1, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) in their seventh straight victory. Seth Trimble scored 20 points while shooting 6 of 13 from the field and 8 for 11 from the line and added seven rebounds and four steals.

The Seminoles (7-7, 0-1) were led by Chauncey Wiggins, who recorded 16 points and 10 rebounds. Robert McCray finished with 11 points, six rebounds and eight assists.

No. 16 Louisville 90, California 70: Sophomore Adrian Wooley scored a season-high 21 points for the Cardinals (12-2) against the Bears (12-2) in Berkeley in the ACC opener for both.

Ryan Conwell made six 3-pointers and had 26 points, and all five Louisville starters scored in double figures.

Chris Bell scored 20 points for Cal (12-2), which had won nine straight. Jordan Pippen, son of former Chicago Bulls star Scottie Pippen, scored 17.

Miami 76, Pittsburgh 69: Malik Reneau scored 28 points and made all 10 of his free throws for the host Hurricanes (12-2), who erased a 43-33 halftime deficit against the Panthers (7-7) in the ACC opener for both teams.

Miami used an 8-0 stretch to take the lead for good after a layup from Reneau with 5:57 remaining.

Cameron Corhen led the Panthers with 17 points and eight rebounds, but Pitt was outrebounded 43-28.

Notre Dame 47, Stanford 40: Jalen Haralson scored 13 points for the visiting Irish (10-4) in an ACC opener defined by poor shooting. Both teams combined to shoot 28% (31 of 112) and 15% from behind the arc (7 of 46).Led by Chisom Okpara’s 13 points, the Cardinal (11-3) shot 23% (13 of 56) and 13% (4 of 30) from 3-point territory. After getting back into contention, they missed their final nine shots.

No. 7 Gonzaga 99, San Diego 93: Virginia transfer Jalen Warley had 22 points and 14 rebounds for the visiting Bulldogs in their 20th straight win against the Toreros.

Gonzaga (14-1, 2-0) was making its final trip to San Diego as a member of the West Coast Conference. However, the Bulldogs will still make annual trips to face San Diego State after the schools begin play in the new-look Pac-12 starting next season.Ty-Laur Johnson scored 21 points for San Diego (6-8, 1-1).

No. 13 Nebraska 86, New Hampshire 55: Payton Sandfort scored 19 points in Lincoln as Nebraska (13-0) shook off a second straight slow start to go undefeated in nonconference play for the first time since 1928-29. Braden Frager scored 15 points and Berke Buyuktuncel added 14.

The Wildcats (4-9), led by Jack Graham’s 15 first-half points, trailed by just three at halftime. Graham had just two in the second half.

No. 19 Tennessee 105, South Carolina State 54: Ja’Kobi Gillespie had 21 points and eight assists, Nate Ament scored 16 points and Amari Evans added 14 points for the host Volunteers (10-3).

Jayden Johnson scored 25 points for the Bulldogs (1-14).

Wyoming 68, Air Force 56: Nasir Meyer had 14 points, five rebounds and six assists for the Cowboys (10-3, 1-1 Mountain West) in Colorado.

Caleb Walker led the Falcons (3-10, 0-2) with 17 points.

Women

No. 18 Washington University 72, Christopher Newport 53: Alyssa Hughes scored 24 points, and the Bears from St. Louis went 13 of 22 (59.1%) from beyond the 3-point line in a victory at the St. Pete Classic in Florida.

McKenna Snively paced CNU (12-3) with 15 points and Madison McKenzie added 12, but the Captains shot just 23.6% from the field and 26.1% (6 of 23) from beyond the arc.

Hughes made six 3-pointers for the Bears (9-2), and Sidney Rogers added 18 points and six rebounds.

CNU saw its 10-game winning streak end.

Virginia Wesleyan 72, Meredith 54: Brianna Long collected 21 points and 14 rebounds as the Marlins (5-4) cruised to a road victory in Raleigh, North Carolina. Bre Robinson added 12 points and five rebounds for VWU.

Rhode Island 73, Richmond 61: The host Rams (11-2, 2-0 Atlantic 10) outplayed the Spiders (11-4, 1-1) by outscoring them 27-17 in the fourth quarter.

Maggie Doogan had 26 points and seven rebounds for Richmond. Palmire Mbu paced Rhode Island with 19 points.
