Simaru Fields scored 21 points and Kelsey Thompson had 16 Sunday as Old Dominion outlasted Howard 63-59 before 2,074 at Chartway Arena.
The Monarchs (7-3) trailed 37-28 late in the first half to the Bison (7-4), who are expected to contend for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship. ODU fought its way back, finishing the third quarter on a 9-0 run for a 53-47 lead. ODU remained in front, with Fields’ free throw at the 21-second mark providing the final point.
Also for ODU, Riley Stack had five points, six rebounds and three blocks, and En’Dya Buford had eight points, three rebounds and three steals. Zennia Thomas led Howard with 21 points.
Duke 70, Virginia Tech 54: Toby Fournier had 19 points, nine rebounds and four blocks and Taina Mair had 17 points as the Blue Devils (4-6, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) ended their early-season woes with a victory at Cassell Coliseum. Carleigh Wenzel netted 15 points and Carys Baker blocked four shots for the Hokies (7-3, 0-1), whose only lead was 10-9.
Virginia 81, Boston College 55: Six Cavaliers scored in double figures as UVA (7-3, 1-0 ACC) dominated BC (4-8, 0-1) at Conte Forum to notch the 1,000th victory in program history.
Kymora Johnson (13 points, four rebounds, nine assists) and Paris Clark (13 points, six rebounds, five assists) led UVA, while Sa’Myah Smith (12), Gabby White (12), Tabitha Amanze (11) and Romi Levy (11) rounded out the double-digit scorers. Amanze grabbed 10 rebounds.
William & Mary 73, American 60: Jana Sallman had 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists as the Tribe (4-4) outplayed the Eagles (1-7) in Washington.
W&M, which also got 18 points from Cassidy Geddes and 15 points, six rebounds and five assists from Natalie Fox, led 23-6 after barely more than 6 1/2 minutes.
James Madison 81, VCU 63: Lake Taylor High graduate Ashanti Barnes had 18 points, nine rebounds, two steals and two blocks for the Dukes (8-3), who went on a 9-2 run after VCU (3-6) had pulled even at 51 before 2,170 at Harrisonburg.
Zakiya Stephenson, had six points and six assists for JMU. Cyriah Griffin, who was a teammate of Stephenson’s at Princess Anne High before playing for King’s Fork and Menchville, had 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting for VCU.
No. 1 Connecticut 102, DePaul 35: Sarah Strong had 20 points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists, Azzi Fudd scored all of her 16 points in the first half and had four steals, and the Huskies extended their Big East regular-season winning streak to 40.
UConn (9-0, 2-0) finished with 23 steals, its third game this season with at least 20, against the Blue Demons (2-8, 0-2). Fifteen of those came in the first half as the Huskies led 58-18 at halftime on a day when UConn retired Hall of Fame guard Sue Bird’s No. 10 in a ceremony before the game.
No. 2 Texas 101, Prairie View A&M 42: Breya Cunningham’s 30 points and 14 rebounds guided the Longhorns (10-0) past the Panthers (2-6) in Austin. Five Texas players scored in double figures.
No. 3 South Carolina 106, NC Central 42: Ta’Niya Latson had a season-high 32 points and Joyce Edwards added 25 for the host Gamecocks (9-1), who cracked the century mark for the fourth time this season.
No. 4 UCLA 80, Oregon 59: Lauren Betts had season highs of 24 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks for the Bruins (9-1, 1-0 Big Ten) in Los Angeles. Ehis Etute and Katie Fiso led Oregon (10-1, 0-1) with 14 points each.
No. 5 LSU 126, New Orleans 62: Kate Koval scored a career-high 22 points to lead six players for LSU (10-0) with at least 10 points against the winless Privateers. The 6-foot-5 Ukrainian, who transferred from Notre Dame, made all nine of her shots for the visiting Tigers.
No. 6 Michigan 104, Purdue 56: Olivia Olson had 26 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Syla Swords added 16 points and Mila Holloway 13 for the host Wolverines (8-1, 1-0 Big Ten) against the Boilermakers (5-4, 0-1). It was their fifth time in nine games that the three sophomore guards have all reached double-figure points.
No. 7 Maryland 100, Minnesota 99, 2 OTs: Trailing 99-90 with 54 seconds left in the second overtime, the Terrapins (11-0, 1-0 Big Ten) closed on a 10-0 run to beat the host Gophers (6-3, 0-1). Saylor Poffenbarger hit a go-ahead layup with 10 seconds remaining.
No. 9 Oklahoma 90, Maryland Eastern Shore 37: Payton Verhulst scored 16 points, freshman standout Aaliyah Chavez scored 14 and Sahara Williams and Raegan Beers each scored 13 for the Sooners (9-1), who won their eighth straight. Ashanti Lynch scored nine points before fouling out, and Lainey Allen had eight points and seven rebounds for UMES (6-6).
No. 10 Iowa State 105, Northern Illinois 52: Audi Crooks scored 30 points in just 19 minutes to lead three players in double figures for Iowa State (10-0). Alisa Williams added 14 points for the host Cyclones, and Addy Brown had 10 points and nine assists.
Longwood 90, UNC Pembroke 62: Malea Brown’s 18 points and three steals and Jesstynie Scott’s 17 points and four steals led the Lancers (7-4) in Farmville.
East Carolina 64, Elon 53: Taylor Barner’s 21 points propelled the Pirates (5-5) to a home victory over the Phoenix (3-5).
Fairfield 93, Richmond 73: Kaety L’Amoreaux had 31 points, six steals and six rebounds as Fairfield (5-3) shot 66% (35 of 53) from the field and handed the Spiders (7-3) their first home defeat.
Maggie Doogan had 24 points and seven assists and Rachel Ullstrom had 18 points and seven rebounds for Richmond.
Liberty 74, George Mason 73: Avery Mills was fouled on a drive and hit 1 of 2 free throws with six-tenths of a second remaining, giving her 24 points and giving the Flames (6-2) a comeback victory over the Patriots (6-5) in Fairfax.
A 10-0 George Mason run gave the hosts a 68-59 lead with 5:39 to go. It was 73-70 before Avery Mills canned a 3-pointer with eight seconds left. Mills then made a steal and drew a foul just before the final buzzer, setting up her winning point.
MJ Johnson scored 25 for the Patriots. Hampton High alumna Kennedy Harris had 11 points.
