High school senior who went viral for ‘record’ $10M in scholarship offers makes final college decision

Sixteen-year-old high school senior Dennis “Maliq” Barnes — who has earned scholarship offers from more than 150 schools — announced his college decision at a news conference today.

“Today, I am pleased to announce my final college decision for the fall of 2023,” Barnes said this morning at his high school campus located in New Orleans.

“It is an honor and privilege to be accepted to the Ivy League Cornell University’s College of Engineering in Ithaca, N.Y.,” he added.

LOUISIANA HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR WHO RECEIVED 125 COLLEGE OFFERS, $9M IN SCHOLARSHIPS, THANKS GOD FOR HIS SUCCESS

Pulling on a red and white Cornell University sweatshirt, Barnes received cheers and applause from his parents, school officials and attendees of the press conference.

“I express great gratitude for the support system both in high school, at home and professors at the collegiate level,” Barnes said. “I have committed to Cornell University and intend to pursue computer science to later move on to practice software development.”

Barnes has reportedly set an all-time record for the total dollars in scholarship awards, which have reached more than $10.1 million from over 150 out of the 188 American colleges and universities that he’s been accepted to, at the time of this writing.

“This whole experience that I’m having right now has given me a sense of gratitude for everything that I do,” Barnes told Fox News Digital.

“I give all the glory to God because he played a huge role in everything that I’m doing today and all of my success. I thank him for allowing me to get through, even when I didn’t want to. Days may be hard. I may be tired. I may be having a bad week, but he always lifted me up to be able to move forward,” Barnes said.

Barnes had college acceptances and scholarships from all over the country — from Louisiana Tech and Kansas State to the University of Arkansas and the University of Iowa, to name a few.

He said he started the college application process last August.

“Breaking a record wasn’t necessarily a goal or something I set out to do,” Barnes said. “I am just a college-bound student, seeking somewhere where I’m comfortable, that has a great program in my major and that’s going to compensate me financially.”

Fox News Digital reached out to Guinness Book of World Records (GWR) about Barnes’ scholarship record.

“The last recorded record for monetary scholarship awards was a high school senior in Lafayette, Louisiana who received $9.4 million in 2019,” International High School of New Orleans (IHSNO), where Barnes attends, wrote in a statement.

Denise James, Barnes’ college counselor told Fox News Digital that Barnes is “a goal setter.”

“He’s an individual who is very conscientious about timelines as it relates to his career pathway,” she said. “He’s very organized.”

HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE’S REACTION TO HIS COLLEGE ACCEPTANCE LETTER GOES VIRAL: ‘FOUGHT HARD FOR THAT’

Maintaining a 4.0 GPA, Barnes was able to test out of two grades, promoting him to the classification of senior at the young age of 16.

He’s president of the National Honor Society and is fluent in Spanish, receiving an official qualification known as “Diplomas en Español” granted by the Institute Cervantes on behalf of Spain’s Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports.

Barnes also ran track and played basketball throughout high school.

Barnes plans to pursue a dual undergraduate degree in computer science and criminal justice.

He has been dually enrolled in Southern University of New Orleans for the past two years pursuing college credits while completing his high school diploma at IHSNO.

Barnes has already racked up 27 college credits.

Barnes said he wants other young people, no matter their story or struggle, to remain focused on education.

“Make a goal and stick to it,” Barnes said.

“Make education a priority over everything else,” he continued. “It’s very easy to be influenced by other people or peer pressure or even just wanting to have fun all the time. But if you keep it as a priority, then you will definitely be successful whenever you put that first and put God first. Keep God in the midst of everything you’re doing, and I can say that you’ll see results in some way.”

Barnes’ high school graduation ceremony is scheduled for May 24 at Frederick J. Sigur Civic Center in St. Bernard Parish in Chalmette, Louisiana.

Review: The 2023 Honda CR-V Sport is a hot hybrid SUV

Honda wants you to get hyped about its newest hybrid.

The all-new 2023 CR-V is available with either an entry-level 190 horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder engine or a 204 horsepower hybrid powertrain.

Honda named all the hybrid models Sport to drive the power point home and expects them to account for about half of the CR-V’s sales.

The Sport models also get a 40 mpg combined fuel economy rating with front-wheel-drive and 37 mpg with all-wheel-drive, so they represent a best of both worlds proposition.

REVIEW: THE 2023 HONDA PILOT TRAILSPORT IS A JUMBO OFF-ROADER

Prices for the CR-V start at $29,705, with the Sport coming in at $33,695 and a fully-loaded all-wheel-drive Sport Touring like we tested topping out at $40,395.

That includes leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel and front seats, a 12-speaker Bose audio system and a hands-free power liftgate that opens into the largest cargo area in the compact SUV class. The CR-V is a little longer and wider than the previous edition and has a roomier passenger cabin.

All CR-Vs come standard with the Honda Sensing suite of electronic driver aids that features automatic emergency braking, active lane-centering and adaptive cruise control. The Sport Touring adds a blind spot monitor and low-speed automatic braking control that can detect obstacles between 1 mph and 6 mph and mitigate colliding with them.

The hybrid system operates seamlessly as it switches between gas, electric and combined modes. Unlike older hybrids, you might not even realize it is one, unless you bring up one of the power-flow diagrams on the digital screen in the instrument cluster or touchscreen infotainment system display.

The Sport has a seven-inch screen and the Sport Touring a nine-inch screen, both with volume knobs and hard quick-access buttons to make it easier to operate them while driving. The infotainment system is equipped with either wired or wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, depending on the model.

The CR-V offers Snow, Eco, Normal and Sport driving modes, and the last definitely dials things up. It gives it a noticeable kick and keeps the powertrain in its sweet spot more often to improve its responsiveness.

The ride quality doesn’t change, but it doesn’t have to. The CR-V is very much a Honda and provides a perfect blend of comfort and handling. Body control is excellent on a twisty road and the suspension soaks up bumps well, even with the relatively low-profile tires on the Sport Touring’s 19-inch wheels.

Real world fuel economy is also right on the money, and the Honda Sensing system takes the edge off of highway driving. It’s one of the few systems like it that allows you to use the lane-centering feature separate from the cruise control. It’s not a hand’s-off feature, but really keeps the vehicle planted in the middle of a lane.

The only increasingly common feature that’s missing from the CR-V range is a 360-degree camera system. It does have a backup camera and plays one of the loudest pedestrian alert sounds when you’re reversing in electric mode. The noise sounds something like a chorus, and I doubt it will be the only thing singing the CR-V’s praises.

The CR-V is usually the second best-selling vehicle in the U.S. that’s not a pickup behind the Toyota Rav4, and the new one has definitely taken a step in the right direction to stay hot on its rival’s tail.

Damar Hamlin joins Tee Higgins on off-roading trip just 4 months after tackle on WR led to cardiac arrest

Damar Hamlin and Tee Higgins will forever be connected after Hamlin’s tackle on the receiver resulted in Hamlin’s on-field cardiac arrest.

It was a scary moment, but the two are moving forward.

Hamlin joined Higgins and two other Cincinnati Bengals receivers, Tyler Boyd and Ja’Marr Chase, for a desert trip of off-roading.

Boyd posted a photo of the four on Instagram with the caption “Hot Boyz.

Hamlin tackled Higgins in the first quarter of their Jan. 2 game in Cincinnati, and the hit resulted in a case of commotio cortis. Medical staffers performed CPR on Hamlin on the field for over nine minutes before he was transported to a hospital in critical condition.

Before that game, Boyd said, Hamlin had attended some youth camps with Boyd and Higgins.

“People don’t really know the relationship that he was building with him,” Boyd said in January of Higgins trying to previously establish a friendship with the Buffalo Bills safety. “I brought him to my camp with D-Hamlin, they became friends and they probably knew each other prior to that because they was playing against each other.”

Higgins said he was excited to eventually “chop it up” and enjoy “laughs and giggles” with Hamlin.

The safety has since been cleared for football and is aiming for a return in the 2023 season.

Bill Barr predicts ‘horror show’ if Trump re-elected, warns he will ‘deliver chaos’

Former Attorney General William Barr said Friday that former President Trump’s presidency would be a “horror show” if he were re-elected because his former boss lacks the “discipline” as well as the “ability for strategic thinking” needed to get things done.

“It is a horror show, you know, when… he’s left to his own devices,” Barr said in remarks at the City Club of Cleveland on Friday in Ohio.

“If you believe in his policies, what he’s advertising is his policies, he’s the last person who could actually execute them and achieve them,” Barr said to a reporter who asked if Trump is fit to be president again.

The reporter noted that some voters say they want Trump re-elected for his policies, and are willing to overlook his mistakes as president in his last term.

“He does not have the discipline,” Barr replied. “He does not have the ability for strategic thinking and linear thinking or setting priorities or how to get things done in the system.”

BILL BARR: TRUMP AND I HAVE OUR ‘DIFFERENCES’ BUT PROSECUTION IS ‘UNJUST TREATMENT’ LIKE RUSSIAGATE

“And, and so you may want his policies. But Trump will not deliver Trump policies,” Barr said.

“He will deliver chaos, and if anything lead to a backlash that will set his policies much further back than they otherwise would be,” Barr said.

BILL BARR SET TO BATTLE BIDEN’S BUREAUCRACY THROUGH NEW LEGAL PROJECT FOCUSED ON ‘EXCESSIVE REGULATION’

According to recent Fox News polling, Trump is the favored candidate for the Republicans in 2024, even ahead of the popular Florida Governor Ron DeSantis who has yet to announce his candidacy but is widely rumored to be considering a run.

Barr served as attorney general under Trump from 2019 to 2020. He was also attorney general during the George H. W. Bush administration.
