Twitter confirms Circle tweets temporarily were not private

Twitter confirmed that a security error that made Circle tweets — posts that only go out to a small subset of trusted friends — surface publicly. TechCrunch reported the glitch in early April, but the platform confirmed the issue today in an email sent to Twitter Circle users.

“In April 2023, a security incident may have allowed users outside of your Twitter Circle to see tweets that should have otherwise been limited to the Circle to which you were posting,” the email said. Twitter claims that the bug has now been fixed, and that the team knows what caused it.

Twitter Circle has been buggy for months, which is concerning for a feature that people use to tweet things they don’t want to share with all of their followers. When we reported on the issue last month, numerous users had been tweeting that people outside of their Circle were liking their private tweets; one user even said that she posted nude photos on her Circle, which slipped through the cracks and surfaced for unintended eyes.

Most often, it seemed that Circle tweets were being surfaced in the For You timeline to users who follow the poster, but were not in their Circle. Others reported that their Circle tweets were reaching even further than those who follow them.

Privacy breaches aside, some Circle tweets still are showing up without the green banner that indicates they’re only visible to a select audience. You can tell that these tweets aren’t public because the retweet button will be greyed out. These tweets still are only reaching their intended Circles, so it’s not necessarily a privacy issue, but it can be a confusing user experience (personally, I have fielded a few messages from friends who were surprised I was tweeting so openly about which neighborhood I live in — I had to reassure them that despite the absence of the green banner, the post was private). TechCrunch first reported on that particular glitch in February, and it still has not been fixed.

In moments like these, I remember something that former Twitter Trust & Safety head Yoel Roth said shortly after leaving the company.

“If protected tweets stop working, run, because that’s a symptom that something is deeply wrong.”

DOJ investigating President Trump’s ties to LIV Golf: report

Amid the Department of Justice’s investigation into former President Donald Trump and classified documents, it is also looking into his ties to the LIV Golf tour.

The DOJ has subpoenaed the Trump Organization for records regarding the relationship between the two parties.

“It is unclear what bearing Mr. Trump’s relationship with LIV Golf has on the broader investigation, but it suggests that the prosecutors are examining certain elements of Mr. Trump’s family business,” The New York Times reports.

Two of Trump’s golf courses — Trump National Bedminster in New Jersey and Trump National Doral in Miami — hosted LIV events last year and will do so this year, as will his resort in Potomac Falls, Virginia, outside of Washington, D.C.

It’s not yet clear how the subpoenas regarding LIV tie into the probe of Trump and how classified documents were recovered from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

Trump participated in the LIV pro-am at Bedminster last July, but he received much criticism for hosting the Saudi-backed tour just miles away from Ground Zero.

Families of 9/11 victims ripped Trump for hosting the tournament, but he defended his decision.

“Nobody’s gotten to the bottom of 9/11, unfortunately,” Trump said at the time. “They should have, as to the maniacs that did that horrible thing to our city, to the country, to the world. So nobody’s really been there.”

“”I’ve known these people for a long time in Saudi Arabia, they’ve been friends of mine for a long time. They’ve invested in many American companies, they own big percentages of many, many American companies, and frankly what they’re doing for golf is so great,” he also said.

Trump played the pro-am alongside Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau and Trump’s son Eric.

Trump has denied any wrongdoing since the FBI raided Mar-a-Lago last August.

AOC And Matt Gaetz Team Up To Ban Lawmakers From Trading Stocks

AOC And Matt Gaetz Team Up To Ban Lawmakers From Trading Stocks

Days before PacWest Bancorp tanked from the mid-20s to the mid $2 range in 48 hours, Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY) – the Levi Strauss heir / Trump impeachment lead counsel-turned-lawmaker, sold his shares in the beleaguered bank.

And while there’s no evidence that Goldman was trading on insider information, Goldman’s win is emblematic of so many others by lawmakers which seem to work out in their favor.

To that end – Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Matt Gaetz (R-FL) have teamed up to co-sponsor a bill which bans members of Congress from trading stocks.

The Bipartisan Restoring Faith in Government Act would ban members of Congress and their spouses and dependents from making financial investments. Also co-sponsoring the bill are Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) and Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL).

The ability to individually trade stock erodes the public’s trust in government,” said Ocasio-Cortez. “When members have access to classified information, we should not be trading in the stock market on it. It’s really that simple.”

Meanwhile, Gaetz told Fox News that “AOC is wrong a lot, she’d probably say the same thing about me, but she’s not corrupt and I will work with anyone and everyone to ensure that Congress is not so compromised.”

A 63% majority of registered voters said they support a ban on stock trading for members of Congress, according to 2022 Morning Consult poll. That includes 69% of Democrats, 64% of independents and 58% of Republicans.

At least 113 members of Congress or members of their families disclosed stock transactions in 2021 totaling $355 million, according to a report from Capitol Trades, which tracks trading on Capitol Hill, and some but not all could be potential conflicts of interest based on lawmakers’ committee assignments. The New York Times found 18% of Congress sat on committees that “potentially gave them insight into the companies whose shares they reported buying or selling.” –Deseret.com

As Axios notes;

  • There was significant bipartisan support for the issue last year, but bills to ban or limit the issue were never brought to the floor for a vote in either chamber.
  • Back in January, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) reintroduced his bill – dubbed the Pelosi Act.
  • After having consistently opposed such a measure, then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) signaled she’d relent.

Last July, former Dallas fed president Richard Fisher slammed then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and her husband Paul over allegations of insider trading.

Clearly people have taken advantage of inside information forever,” Fisher told CNBC, responding to a report from Punchbowl News. “I’m sorry to see that Paul Pelosi and Nancy Pelosi and others appear to have taken advantage of inside information.”

The Pelosis have repeatedly come under fire for the trades which appeared to be based on nonpublic information.

Recall, the last we wrote about Pelosi’s suspiciously good timing with her stock trades, we noted she had punted on several names heading into 2023. Prior to her trades being carefully scrutinized, Pelosi had a knack for minting cash from her stock trades, which we detailed here

In March of 2021, the Pelosis scored $1.95 million on Microsoft call options less than two weeks before the tech giant secured a $22 billion contract to supply US Army combat troops with augmented reality headsets, while in January of the same year, Paul Pelosi bought up to $1 million of Tesla calls before the Biden administration announced plans to push electric vehicles.

British PM Rishi Sunak refuses to ‘unpick history’ with slave trade apology, reparations

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has rejected calls from the opposition party to issue an apology for the United Kingdom’s role in slave trading or to discuss reparations.

“What I think our focus should now be on doing is, of course, understanding our history and all its parts, not running away from it, but right now making sure that we have a society which is inclusive and tolerant of people from all backgrounds,” Sunak said last week.

“That’s something that we on this side of the house are committed to doing and will continue to deliver, but trying to unpick our history is not the right way forward, and it’s not something that we will focus our energies on.”

Labour MP Bell Ribeiro-Addy had challenged Sunak to take a more aggressive stance on the issue, noting that past prime ministers and heads of state had only “expressed sorrow or deep regret” on the issue, The Guardian reported.

UK PUBLISHERS, BROADCASTERS BLAST BBC ‘BLACKOUT’ OF CORONATION OF KING CHARLES: ‘WE ARE DEEPLY CONCERNED’

Her query follows a recent call from the descendants of some of Britain’s wealthiest slave traders to begin a reparations program to make up for the “ongoing consequences of this crime against humanity.”

A Labour spokesperson said Ribeiro-Addy’s call was not a party policy, but party leader Sir Keir Starmer did not respond to a Fox News Digital request for comment by time of publication.

Nile Gardiner, director of the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom at The Heritage Foundation, told Fox News Digital this is only a recent issue of discussion for the U.K,. and the idea that the British government might pay reparations is “utterly ridiculous.”

“The British government has no intention of going down that path, and rightly so,” Gardiner said.

BRITAIN’S COMPETITION WATCHDOG OPENS INVESTIGATION INTO ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE MARKET

“The reality is that Britain was the world’s leader in stamping out slavery and fighting it across the world, including on the high seas, and invested a huge amount of money, manpower and military might in suppressing the slave trade. So, this idea of in the U.K. paying reparations is utterly ridiculous.

“Britain’s role in defeating the slave trade is something for the British people to be incredibly proud of.”

The slave trade started in 1526 with Portugal’s purchase of slaves from West Africa to transport across the Atlantic, kicking off the Transatlantic or Triangle Slave Trade. The first British citizen on record to buy and sell slaves was John Lok in 1555, followed by William Towerson in 1556.

Britain outright abolished slavery in the colonies and bought out slaves from their owners across the empire in 1833 with the introduction of the Slavery Abolition Act. Some exceptions and delays occurred during the process.

UK UNIVERSITY CUTS ‘WOMAN’ FROM MENOPAUSE AND MATERNITY POLICY DESCRIPTIONS

Protesters in 2020 during the global Black Lives Matter protests tore down or defaced the statues of famous men who had engaged in slave trading, such as Edward Colston of Bristol, whose statue protesters threw into the nearby harbor after dragging it through the streets.

Bernie Grant, a Labour Party politician from Tottenham, London, in his final session of Prime Minister’s Questions asked if former Prime Minister Tony Blair would issue an apology for slavery to the people of African descent, living or dead.

Blair said he expressed “deep sorrow,” later saying, “I have said we are sorry, and I say it again.”

Labour MPs Clive Lewis and Dawn Butler in March renewed calls for the government to enter “meaningful negotiations” with former Caribbean colonies and pay for reparations.

Gardiner labeled such arguments as “wrong-headed” and driven by “far-left ideology” that has “very little public support.”

“It’s going to go nowhere,” he said, adding that reparations were “completely unrealistic,” laying blame on similar calls and discussions in the U.S. for stirring up the idea.

“These kinds of calls have accelerated significantly in the last couple of years, and I think much of this is coming from across the Atlantic in the United States, really,” Gardiner said. “I think this is a relatively new development, but there is zero chance of a Conservative government ever agreeing to pay reparations, and I think it’s unlikely that a Labour government would agree as well.

“No country did more in the world to fight slavery than the United Kingdom.”
