Studies Show The Value Of Fathers In The Home

Authored by Linda Stein via the Delaware Valley Journal,

In Abington, two teenagers carjacked an 82-year-old man at the Willow Grove mall. A fight near Upper Darby High School left a teen stabbed. A 16-year-old Bensalem boy allegedly shot a girl and asked for help disposing of her body over Instagram.

People shake their heads and ask, where are the parents? But the better question might be: Where are the fathers?

Rafael Mangual, head of research, policing, and public safety for The Manhattan Institute, a free market think tank, told DVJournal data reveals that having a father in their early childhood is key for boys to grow up to be productive, law-abiding people.

But the number of single-parent households, with the mother usually at the helm, keeps growing.

Mangual said, “There is a very clear association between the incidents of out-of-wedlock childbirth and delinquency and criminality in males.”

Two-parent households are “an institution whose primary path is raising and socializing children. Early childhood development is critically important.”

“One of the things the literature tells us is that when you have young boys around the ages of 5 to 7 who have developed conduct disorders, that becomes relatively predictive of future criminality in adolescents.”

But he cautioned, “The majority of those kids will turn out just fine. Those conduct disorders will get resolved either through psychological intervention or the passage of time.”

However, a. good portion of boys will develop conduct disorders that metastasize to anti-social dispositions, he said.

“One of the things we see in prison settings is a much higher rate of psychological conditions like substance abuse disorders or anti-social personality disorder” in men raised by single mothers, said Mangual.

Mangual noted that in the general population of men in the U.S., anti-social personality disorder affects between 2 and 4 percent. Depending on the facility, it is between 40 to 70 percent of men in prisons, a “massive disparity.”

The Pennsylvania Juvenile Court Judges’ Commission suggests being raised by a single parent predicts juvenile crime. In 2021, more than 80 percent of every youth in juvenile court lived in a single-parent household.

Of those, about 48 percent lived with a single mother. And 15.5 percent lived with both their parents.

Michael Chitwood, retired Upper Darby police superintendent and former Philadelphia detective, said he had observed the phenomenon during his years in law enforcement.

Without a father figure or male figure in their lives, they don’t listen,” Chitwood said. “Fathers hold them accountable.” He saw “over and over” when investigating homicides or other serious crimes, “more often than not, it was one-parent families for those who committed serious crimes.”

“It’s a sad trend,” Chitwood said.

Mangual said, “It doesn’t just come out of the blue. It often starts in early childhood. That suggests a high incidence of out-of-wedlock birth, and high rates of single-parent homes in which fathers are absent means that you are increasing the likelihood of the socialization process breaking down in early childhood.”

In Pennsylvania, 35 percent of children are raised in single-parent households, and in the U.S., single-parent family numbers have been rising since the 1950s and now stand at 34 percent.

The towns with the most single-parent families headed by women in the Delaware Valley are Bensalem in Bucks County, Pottstown in Chester County, Norristown in Montgomery County, and Upper Darby in Delaware County, according to the estimated U.S. Census five-year report.

Asked whether having other male role models like uncles or clergy can mitigate the lack of a father in a boy’s life, Mangual said, “There is some research that supports that. Neighborhoods with higher rates of potential role models have lower rates of crime. The problem is the difference between an uncle, or a pastor, or a teacher, and a father is, the father is in an ideal situation. He is going to be there all the time and will be there for those really important moments.”

Asked about how fatherless girls fare, Mangual said they are more likely to engage in self-harm, like eating disorders or other psychological disorders, rather than turn to crime and violence.

Mangual said anti-social personality disorder “is a lack of remorse, a lack of regard for future consequences, a lack of regard for other people, a very high sense of entitlement (in the clinical sense).”

What can be done to reverse the single-parent trend?

Mangual said it is more complicated than just encouraging couples to stay together. While, generally, two parents are better than one, “If one or both of those parents can be characterized by a history of anti-social behavior, then that can actually negate the benefits of two parents. Kids who have one parent might be better off if one of those two parents is anti-social in their disposition.”

And Mangual said he believes this “cultural and social” problem needs to be solved by society, not the government.

Although, “to the extent that welfare policy penalizes marriage or cohabitation between parents, there’s some cases where a family might lose benefits if a mother and father get married. That’s certainly something the government can look to change.”

FBI handcuffs, interrogates innocent Delta Air Lines pilot in botched Boston training exercise

The FBI and other federal agents burst into the wrong Boston hotel room Tuesday night during a training exercise, startling the guest inside who had no idea what was going on as he was handcuffed.

The incident occurred on the 15th floor of the Revere Hotel as agents were conducting a mock investigation. FBI agents were assisting the U.S. Department of Defense in a training exercise inside the hotel to simulate a situation that DOD personnel might encounter in a deployed environment.

“Based on inaccurate information, they were mistakenly sent to the wrong room and detained an individual, not the intended role player,” the FBI told WBZ-TV in a statement.

The agents targeted room 1505, where a Delta Air Lines pilot was sleeping inside and opened the door.

When agents went in, they handcuffed the man, who is in his 30s, before interrogating him and putting him in the shower, the news report said.

They eventually realized the mistake and apologized. Hotel security was alerted to the incident and called the Boston Police Department.

“We are looking into reports of an alleged incident in Boston that may involve Delta people,” the airline told Fox News Digital in a statement. “We have nothing further to share at this time other than to reaffirm our commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of our people.”

Fox News Digital has reached out to the hotel, the DOD and the FBI.

“Safety is always a priority of the FBI, and our law enforcement partners, and we take these incidents very seriously,” the FBI said. “The Boston Division is reviewing the incident with DOD for further action as deemed appropriate.”

Texas man, former Alex Jones employee, gets home detention for storming Capitol

A Texas man who worked for conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ website, Infowars, was sentenced on Wednesday to four months of home detention for joining a mob’s attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Samuel Montoya, 37, was employed as a video editor for Infowars when he stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and captured footage of a police officer fatally shooting a rioter, Ashli Babbitt.

Before a judge announced his sentence, Montoya called himself “a member of the media” and said he regrets his “approach to filming and reporting on the events that day.”

ALEX JONES ORDERED TO PAY $473 MILLION MORE IN DAMAGES TO SANDY HOOK VICTIMS’ FAMILIES BY CONNECTICUT JUDGE

“Nothing like what happened at the Capitol that day should ever take place again,” Montoya said. “I truly hope my apology offers a bit of closure to my fellow countrymen as we recover and heal together.”

U.S. District Judge John Bates said Montoya “doesn’t get a free pass … just because he considered himself a journalist.”

“He was more than just a reporter,” the judge said before sentencing Montoya. “He was not just an observer. He was a participant.”

Montoya pleaded guilty in November to one count of parading, demonstrating or picketing in a Capitol building, a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in prison.

Prosecutors recommended sentencing Montoya to 45 days of imprisonment. Bates instead sentenced Montoya to 3 years of probation, including 120 days of home detention and 60 hours of community service, and ordered him to pay a $1,500 fine plus $500 in restitution. The judge said it was a “close call” in deciding to spare him from incarceration.

A video that Montoya recorded for Infowars showed him celebrating the attack and joining other rioters in breaking through a line of police officers in the Capitol’s Crypt.

“We’re storming!” he said.

Montoya invoked his participation in the riot when he mounted an unsuccessful congressional campaign in the 35th district of Texas last year. His campaign website was capitolsam.com and included a section called “Arrest and Political Persecution.”

Two days after the riot, Montoya appeared on an Infowars show hosted by Owen Shroyer and described the scene of Babbitt’s shooting.

The officer shot Babbitt, a 35-year-old Air Force veteran from San Diego, as she climbed through a broken door leading into the House Speaker’s lobby. The officer was cleared of wrongdoing by both federal prosecutors and Capitol police.

Montoya was arrested in April 2021. Shroyer also was arrested on Capitol riot-related charges. The case against Shroyer hasn’t been resolved.

Infowars founder and host Alex Jones claimed he told Montoya to stay in Texas to work on the site’s broadcasts while Jones and others went to Washington, D.C., for the “Stop the Steal” rally on Jan. 6, according to prosecutors.

NYC NEWSPAPER EDITOR ARRESTED FOR ALLEGED POLICE INTERFERENCE AT CAPITOL RIOT

“Jones said that Montoya went to D.C. on his own, and that Jones had instructed his staff not to go inside the U.S. Capitol,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexis Loeb wrote in a court filing.

Jones used Infowars to promote former President Donald Trump’s baseless claims of election fraud. Jones hasn’t been charged with any Jan. 6-related crimes.

In October, a Connecticut jury ordered Jones and his company, Free Speech System, to pay nearly $1 billion in damages to compensate families of children and educators killed in the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The families said Jones broadcast lies about the school shooting that subjected them to harassment and threats.

Jones’ company hired Montoya in 2018. He was laid off in November after the company filed for bankruptcy, according to his attorney.

Approximately 1,000 people have been charged with federal crimes related to the Jan. 6 riot. More than 600 of them have pleaded guilty or been convicted after trials decided by a jury or judge. Roughly 450 have been sentenced, with over half getting terms of imprisonment ranging from seven days to 10 years.

Britain to house 500 migrants on barge docked off English coast

Some 500 asylum-seekers in the U.K. will be housed on a barge docked off the south coast of England, the British government said Wednesday of its latest measure aimed at discouraging migrants from crossing the English Channel in small unseaworthy boats.

The housing plan is part of a broader effort by the Conservative government to curb migration and cut hotel bills that cost taxpayers 2.3 billion-pounds ($2.9 billion) a year amid a backlog of hundreds of thousands of asylum cases.

It could take months before the barge, currently in Italy, is anchored at Portland, off the Dorset coast. The government’s plan could face legal challenges along with other forms of opposition.

CYPRUS RELOCATES 76 AFGHAN, SYRIAN MIGRANTS TO FRANCE

Human rights groups said the barge would be a cruel place to house vulnerable people fleeing war and the idea should be scrapped along with a plan to move thousands of migrants to barracks at unused military bases.

“Confining hundreds of people in isolation on a barge is just more of the political theater that the government has created to obscure its gross mismanagement of the asylum system,” said Steve Valdez-Symonds, refugee and migrants director for Amnesty International UK.

The Tory-run Dorset Council and the area’s Conservative representative in Parliament, Richard Drax, were considering legal action to prevent the barge from being docked near the seaside resort of Weymouth.

U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said using the barge for housing was a fair way to deal with Channel crossings and would save money.

ITALY ESTIMATES 680K MIGRANTS IN LIBYA WANT TO CROSS MEDITERRANEAN SEA FOR EUROPE

“We are spending, as a country, 6 million-pounds ($7.5 million) a day housing illegal asylum-seekers in hotels. That can’t be right,” Sunak said.

More than 50,000 asylum-seekers are staying in temporary accommodations while awaiting a decision on their applications, a process that can months.

Sunak’s government is determined to crack down on the arrivals and is pushing a controversial migration bill that would bar asylum claims by anyone who reaches the U.K. by unauthorized means and deport migrants back home or to a third country.

More than 45,000 people arrived in Britain by boat from northern France in 2022, up from 28,000 in 2021 and 8,500 in 2020.

Charlotte Democrat switched parties after being called ‘ammosexual,’ critiqued for invoking Jesus Christ

A North Carolina state lawmaker sounded off Wednesday after switching affiliation from Democratic to Republican following what she said were unending personal attacks from her own political wing, some of which were focused on her car’s American flag decal and her respect for the Second Amendment.

In doing so, State Rep. Tricia Cotham, R-Mecklenburg, incidentally awarded Republicans in the lower chamber a veto-proof supermajority against North Carolina Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper – whom they clashed with during his coronavirus lockdown orders, and beyond.

Cotham told “Your World” she entered politics to be a public servant and “stateswoman; do greater good for all of the great state of North Carolina,” – having served previously for a decade and returned to office after time outside politics.

However, upon her entrance to the caucus, Cotham felt her party had undergone a sudden negative lurch:

NORTH CAROLINA STATE SENATE VOTES TO OVERRIDE DEMOCRATIC GOV ROY COOPER’S VETO TO LOOSEN GUN RESTRICTIONS

“I noticed some pretty big changes in the Democratic Party right when I got here, and it was very disturbing,” she said, adding she prominently features the Stars & Stripes on her personal vehicle and speaks openly about her faith.

“I’ve used Jesus several times when I’ve led our chamber in House prayer – I was told you can never trust a Dem who wears camo and just this week [was] called an ammosexual.”

She called those attacks antithetical to what the U.S. stands for, and cited her past work – formerly across the aisle – with Republicans during her tenure.

Her affiliation change led Democrats to call for her resignation, she said, as House Minority Leader Robert Reives II, D-Pittsboro, said Cotham said she campaigned to pursue a Democratic agenda in a blue district.

NORTH CAROLINA DEMOCRAT EXPECTED TO SWITCH PARTIES, JOIN GOP

Cotham claimed to Fox News that “thousands of dollars in false ads” have since gone after her family, which she said affects her two children and her role as a single mother.

“I think this will start a trend throughout our country because people have had enough,” Cotham said.

“You know, it takes a lot to this. I’m a doer. I’m a risk-taker. I do what I think is right, even if I am the only one doing it. That is who I am and what I believe,” she said, adding she is open to dialogue with other affiliated Democratic lawmakers who may want to consider leaving the leftist party.

North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Michael Whatley said Cotham’s announcement shows the Democratic Party is “too radical” for the Tarheel State, adding in a statement that “The values of the Republican Party align with voters, and the people of Mecklenburg County should be proud to have her representation in Raleigh.”
