World Cup 2022: USA feeling confident heading into pivotal do-or-die match after draw with England

The casual soccer fan probably saw Friday’s 0-0 draw between the United States and England and immediately thought there was no way it could be considered a success.

But the Americans’ immediate reaction after Friday’s match was the opposite, and rightfully so.

The USMNT entered Friday’s game as a heavy underdog, but a far less superior United States squad went step-for-step with the clear front-runner in Group B.

“I think both teams worked hard, both teams gave each other difficulties at times, and all-in-all, pleased with the effort. Any time you can get a shutout in the World Cup, it’s a good thing,” head coach Gregg Berhalter said after the game.

The U.S. outcornered the English, 7-3, and outshot them, 10-8, although three of England’s shots were on goal, compared to just one for the Americans.

“I think there was definitely a lot of positives. We had stretches even in the first half where we looked dominant and created some chances,” Christian Pulisic said. “Unfortunately, couldn’t finish some of them off, but we managed the game quite well. And to come away with a draw against them is obviously a pretty good result, but we felt that we could have even won the game.”

“That was the one thing that was missing, just putting the ball in the back of the net,” Weston McKennie added. “The final passes were there, but unlucky. We take away the point, and the most important thing is that it’s in our hands how we want to continue in this group.”

Yes, it is in their hands.

Entering the match, the United States controlled its own destiny, but a loss would have put the U.S. in the gutter of Group B, needing a miracle to advance to the knockout stage.

With the draw, though, the Americans control their own fate.

WORLD CUP 2022: USA DRAWS WITH ENGLAND, MAKING FINAL GAME OF GROUP PLAY MUST-WIN

When Tuesday comes around, though, they cannot afford their third draw of the tournament. They need a win and must win to advance. With an upset win Friday, they could have afforded a draw in the final game of group play.

But if the match against England was a sign of things to come, the USMNT has something positive on which to build.

“It’s all about winning the game,” said Pulisic. “So we gotta come out very aggressive and win the game to move on to the next round, and I’m very confident that we can do it.”

“I’d like to see goals. We’re proud, but our work’s not done,” Berhalter said. “We have to win on Tuesday, and we know five points get us in. We have to focus on the five points.”

Glenn Greenwald butchers Taylor Lorenz for ‘asylum-worthy babbling’ about Musk’s Twitter plans

The Intercept co-founder and independent journalist Glenn Greenwald ripped into Washington Post tech reporter Taylor Lorenz for her recent article claiming Elon Musk’s reinstatement of banned Twitter accounts will turn the platform into a “free-for-all hellscape.”

Greenwald criticized Lorenz’s reporting, accusing her of finding “3 or 4 people more neurotic, clearly unstable, and censorship-happy than she” to trash Twitter and its new owner.

On Thanksgiving, Lorenz published a piece titled, “‘Opening the gates of hell’: Musk says he will revive banned accounts.” It was a report detailing the “alarm of activists and online trust and safety experts” over Musk’s recent announcement that he would be granting “amnesty” to accounts that had been previously banned on the platform.

ELON MUSK EXPOSES ‘SECRET CLOSET’ FULL OF ‘STAY WOKE’ T-SHIRTS AT TWITTER HQ

Musk made the announcement after consulting Twitter users with an online Twitter poll asking, “Should Twitter offer a general amnesty to suspended accounts, provided that they have not broken the law or engaged in egregious spam?” The majority of voters clicked, “Yes.”

Musk’s polling strategy was the same one he used to decide to reinstate former president Donald Trump’s account to the platform.

On Twitter, Greenwald bashed Lorenz and other outlets doing similar reporting. His thread on the subject began by targeting an Axios article, accusing it of over-the-top liberal criticism of Musk’s maneuver in order to spin the narrative it was harmful for society.

He tweeted, “BREAKING! Allowing those disliked by liberals to be heard on the internet will *literally* kill many people, warn the most neurotic, mentally unwell, petulant petty-tyrants who have declared themselves ‘online safety experts’ and are now called that by liberal media outlets.”

The rest of his thread focused on Lorenz’s reporting, which he accused of pushing the same narrative.

“Taylor Lorenz miraculously found 3 or 4 people more neurotic, clearly unstable, and censorship-happy than she, bestowed them with fake expertise titles, and now the WPost is blasting out her alarmist asylum-worthy babbling to millions. #journalism,” Greenwald tweeted.

The independent journalist followed up his assessment by criticizing one of the cited experts in Lorenz’s article, Harvard Law School’s clinical instructor Alejandra Caraballo, an outspoken left-wing figure. Caraballo told Lorenz that Musk taking over was “like the gates of hell opened on this site tonight.”

Greenwald ripped Caraballo, tweeting, “This is one of Lorenz’s Twitter friends – just look at tweets of hers to see how unhinged and disturbed she is – whom the WPost cites as an expert to warn Musk’s mildly greater free speech is ‘existentially dangerous for various marginalized communities.’”

He provided screenshots of some of Caraballo’s previous tweets. One from more than a week ago featured her saying, “I don’t think Twitter will last through the weekend.” In another, she tweeted, “Since this site is like about to collapse imminently, here are my other socials.” She then provided links to her Mastodon and Instagram accounts.

Greenwald also bashed Lorenz for citing UCLA professor Sarah Roberts, who suggested that the results of Musk’s Twitter poll might be “manipulated.”

“Lorenz’s article quotes her unwell Harvard friend, a partisan goon at Media Matters, a UCLA professor whose pro-censorship insanity is off-the-charts, but not one person who thinks censorship is dangerous,” Greenwald tweeted.

He added, “Including the other side is ‘journalism,’ which is not what Taylor does.”

For good measure, Greenwald also knocked a bit of similar reporting from the Associated Press, which published a piece stating that “online safety experts” think Musk reinstating banned accounts will “spur a rise in harassment.”

Greenwald asked, “What the f*** is an ‘online safety expert’? Do you see how media outlets baptize totally fake expertise industries and titles (like ‘disinformation reporter’) to launder their highly politicized censorship agenda as scientific, data-based and neutral?”

As Negotiations Fracture, EU Postpones Talks On Russian Oil Price Cap To Monday

As Negotiations Fracture, EU Postpones Talks On Russian Oil Price Cap To Monday

Although today was the deadline for EU diplomats to determine the specifics of the Russian oil price cap, we pointed out earlier just how “great” discussions were going with Poland rejecting a proposed cap of $65 per barrel as being too soft, while Greece refusing to consider anything below $70.

Meanwhile, amid the growing discord, in typical European fashion – where nobody has even looked at the math ahead of time – the entire concept of a price cap was clearly meaningless as explained in “The Ridiculous Reality Of The Russian Oil Price Cap Debate In One Picture.”

Which is why it wasn’t at all surprising that on Friday, European Union diplomats suspended talks on capping Russian oil prices, as Poland and the Baltic states objected to a proposal they consider too generous to Moscow.

As Bloomberg reports, diplomats had expected a deal to be done on Friday night but positions remained entrenched and the talks were postponed to Monday.

As previewed earlier this week, the bloc has been locked in a fight over how strict the Group of Seven-led price cap should be. Poland and the Baltic nations are outraged at a proposal to cap Russian oil prices at $65 per barrel limit, as the level is above the rates Moscow sells crude now, making the entire price cap discussion completely meaningless and purely an exercise in virtue signaling.

Poland is demanding additional sanctions, a review mechanism, and a price below the market level, according to a senior diplomat.

And as always happens when Europe has to reach a unanimous decision, with Poland and the Baltic states digging their heels in, the spat has laid bare the fundamental tension at the heart of the price cap idea. Countries are being forced to choose between two priorities that are almost impossible to resolve: trying to choke off revenue to Russia and avoiding potentially painful spikes in the oil price that could damage the global economy.

“If you put the price cap too high, it doesn’t really bite,” European Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis said in an interview on Bloomberg TV. “Oil is the biggest source of revenue for Russian budget, so it’s very important get this right so it really has an impact on Russia’s ability to finance this war.”

On the other end of the spectrum from Poland are shipping nations like Greece, which favor a higher level that will help keep trade flowing, and boosting state revenues derived from quietly helping Russia break the oil embargo by turning a blind eye to an entire industry of ship-to-ship transfers that has taken Greece by storm.

The talks have been fraught because at $65, the cap is above the prices that Russia is already accepting for its crude from ravenous buyers such as China and India – a level which is heavily discounted to global benchmarks.

Such a “cap” would allow Moscow to argue that it’s business as usual; at the same time, the Kremlin had said it would refuse to sell oil to anyone signing up to the cap – but on Thursday appeared to hint it could soften its stance.

Still, Europe can only kick the can so long: the Dec. 5 deadline is looming, at which point EU sanctions on Russian oil are set to kick, and the disruption to the market will likely be greater if the price cap isn’t in place as all Russian oil exports would be suspended, unless of course Europe stops being a vassal state of the US State Department and decides to do away with the Russian sanctions entirely (for an objective assessment of who holds the upper hand in Europe, read Ambrose Evans-Pritchard with “Putin has another gas shock for us: the deindustrialisation of Europe “.

The EU sanctions would bar access to insurance and services for any ship transporting Russian oil. The cap allows access to those services, but only if the crude is purchased below a certain price. The US proposed the price cap earlier this year as an alternative to EU sanctions that were so strict they risked shutting down swaths of production.

The US argued that a spike in prices caused by EU sanctions could eventually help Putin — as well as being ruinous for the global economy.

Oil prices have fallen in recent days, partly on signs a deal could keep Russian oil flowing, easing the pressure on the global market. Then again this is Europe, and anything that is seen as a consensus outcome will never happen…

Bills’ Von Miller did not tear ACL, expected to be reevaluated in 7-10 days: report

Buffalo Bills outside linebacker Von Miller did not suffer an ACL tear in Thursday’s game against the Detroit Lions.

Miller was carted off the field during the Thanksgiving Day game, and an MRI later revealed the pass rusher had a lateral meniscus tear, according to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The amount of time Miller will miss remains unknown, but he will be reevaluated in seven to 10 days, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.

The 33-year-old will likely have to undergo surgery, but the question is whether that surgery will take place during or after the NFL season.

PANTHERS’ SAM DARNOLD ON ZACH WILSON BENCHING: ‘IT’S A CRAZY BUSINESS’

Miller was injured after he took a hit from the side by a Lions offensive lineman in the first half. His leg was then rolled over as the play was ending.

An ACL tear would have ended Miller’s season, but he can now take a wait-and-see approach over the next week and a half as it relates to the knee. Rapoport did note that Miller could return to the field and wear a brace. Miller tore an ACL in 2013.

The eight-time Pro Bowler has racked up eight sacks in the first eight games of this season. He was the Bills’ biggest offseason free-agent acquisition and signed a six-year, $120 million contract with the team.

Miller has won two Super Bowls, one with the Denver Broncos and one last year with the Los Angeles Rams. He was named the Super Bowl 50 MVP after the Broncos defeated the Carolina Panthers.

Any amount of time that Miller is forced to miss would be a significant blow to the Bills’ defense. The unit ranks fourth in the NFL in pass defense, and is tied for 12th in total yards allowed per game this season.

The Bills will travel to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, to play the New England Patriots on Thursday.

Nebraska working on deal with Matt Rhule to make him next head coach: report

The Nebraska Cornhuskers are getting closer to hiring the next head coach for a football program that has fallen on hard times

Matt Rhule, who was fired as head coach of the Carolina Panthers in October, and Nebraska are working on finalizing a deal in the coming days, according to ESPN.

Nebraska fired head coach Scott Frost in September after an embarrassing loss to Georgia Southern.

LANE KIFFIN EXPECTS TO RETURN TO OLE MISS NEXT SEASON FOLLOWING LOSS TO MISSISSIPPI STATE

Under Frost, the Cornhuskers failed to win five games in a season, lost 10 consecutive one-score games and became an afterthought in the Big Ten.

Frost finished his time at his alma mater with a record of 16-31.

Mickey Joseph, a former Nebraska quarterback, took over for Frost on an interim basis after coaching the wide receivers and has gone 2-6 since taking over the program.

The Panthers fired Rhule after a 1-4 start to the season in just his third year in Carolina.

Carolina hired Rhule after his two successful stints as head coach of the Temple Owls and the Baylor Bears.

In Rhule’s first season at Baylor, the Bears went 1-11 but won 11 games in 2019 before he jumped to the NFL.

At Temple, Rhule took the program from just two wins in his first year to back-to-back 10-win seasons in 2015 and 2016.
