How to run data on Kubernetes: 6 starting principles

Kubernetes is fast becoming an industry standard, with up to 94% of organizations deploying their services and applications on the container orchestration platform, per a survey. One of the key reasons companies deploy on Kubernetes is standardization, which lets advanced users see productivity gains of up to two times.

Standardizing on Kubernetes gives organizations the ability to deploy any workload, anywhere. But there was a missing piece: the technology assumed that workloads were ephemeral, meaning that only stateless workloads could be safely deployed on Kubernetes. However, the community recently changed the paradigm and brought features such as StatefulSets and Storage Classes, which make using data on Kubernetes possible.

While running stateful workloads on Kubernetes is possible, it is still challenging. In this article, I provide ways to make it happen and why it is worth it.

Do it progressively

Kubernetes is on its way to being as popular as Linux and the de facto way of running any application, anywhere, in a distributed fashion. Using Kubernetes involves learning a lot of technical concepts and vocabulary. For instance, newcomers might struggle with the many Kubernetes logical units such as containers, pods, nodes, and clusters.

If you are not running Kubernetes in production yet, don’t jump directly into data workloads. Instead, start with moving stateless applications to avoid losing data when things go sideways.

If you can’t find an operator that matches your needs, don’t worry, because most of them are open-source.

Understand the limitations and specificities

Once you are familiar with general Kubernetes concepts, dive into the specifics for stateful concepts. For example, because applications may have different storage needs, such as performance or capacity requirements, you must provide the correct underlying storage system.

What the industry generally calls storage “profiles” is termed Storage Classes in Kubernetes. They provide a way to describe the different types of classes a Kubernetes cluster can access. Storage classes can have different quality-of-service levels, such as I/O operations per second per GiB, backup policies, or arbitrary policies, such as binding modes and allowed topologies.

Another critical component to understand is StatefulSet. It is the Kubernetes API object used to manage stateful applications, and offers key features such as:

  • Stable, unique network identifiers that let you keep track of volume, and detach and reattach them as you please;
  • Stable, persistent storage so that your data is safe;
  • Ordered, graceful deployment and scaling, which is required for many Day 2 operations.

While StatefulSet has been a successful replacement for the infamous PetSet (now deprecated), it is still imperfect and has limitations. For example, the StatefulSet controller has no built-in support for volume (PVC) resizing — which is a major challenge if the size of your application data set is about to grow above the current allocated storage capacity. There are workarounds, but such limitations must be understood well ahead of time so that the engineering team knows how to handle them.

Virginia Walmart gunman’s manifesto claims he was ‘betrayed’ by coworkers he killed, felt ‘led by’ Satan

Andre Bing — an employee and accused gunman behind six killings at a Chesapeake, Virginia Walmart — left a manifesto blaming the deadly violence on “torment” by coworkers and demonic influences.

“Sorry God, I’ve failed you, this was not your fault but my own. I failed to listen to the groans of the holy spirit which made me a poor representation of You,” Bing wrote in a note released Friday by Chesapeake police.

Chesapeake city officials identified Bing as the gunman believed to have killed six people before police say he turned his pistol on himself.

Bing legally purchased the 9mm handgun from a local store on the morning of the shooting, police revealed Friday. He had no criminal history. Police found a box of ammunition and “various items in reference to the 9mm handgun (box, receipt, other paperwork)” at Bing’s home.

CHESAPEAKE, VIRGINIA WALMART GUNMAN HAD MANIFESTO ON PHONE: REPORT

Bing wrote that he “was harassed by idiots with low intelligence and a lack of wisdom,” specifically mentioning an incident in which his “dignity was completely taken away beyond repair by my phone getting hacked.”

The “Death note” includes multiple anecdotes of what Bing believed was targeted harassment from his coworkers. He goes on to state he believed that those around him were intentionally harassing him and sabotaging his life.

VIDEO EMERGES OF WALMART GUNMAN LAUGHING WITH COWORKERS YEARS BEFORE DEADLY SHOOTING

“A few months back I had overheard [REDACTED] talking to [REDACTED] and he told me that he had been trying to get rid of me since day one. After I heard that I lashed out. The associates gave me twisted grins, mocked me and celebrated my down fall the last day. That’s why they suffer the same fate as me.”

WALMART SAYS IT IS ‘SHOCKED’ BY CHESAPEAKE STORE SHOOTING

He closed the screed by claiming he was a “loving” person and saying that what he had wanted to find a wife but that he “didn’t deserve one.”

“My true intent was never to murder anyone believe it or not, I was actually one of the most loving people in the world if you would get to know me. I just wanted a wife that was equally yoked as I and obsessed over the though; however, I didn’t deserve a wife.”

The document has recurring religious themes and references to both God and the demonic, with Bing writing, “Sorry everyone but I did not plan this I promise things just fell in place like I was led by the Satan.”

At one point, Bing says a coworker was “emanating with the holy spirit” and “unlike me she actually listened to the holy spirit.”

He then recounts that the person, “knew they were antagonizing me so one day she approached me in personnel and apologized to me. On her last day she looked me in the eyes terrified by a demonic aura.”

The text closes with the statement, “My God forgive me for what I’m going to do.”

30-year-old man killed, Oklahoma sheriff’s deputy injured in exchange of gunfire

A 30-year-old man was killed and an Oklahoma sheriff’s deputy was wounded during a Thanksgiving morning shooting in the northwest of the state, authorities said.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said it’s investigating the shooting in Buffalo between sheriff’s deputies and a man who had attempted to enter a building with a shotgun and later opened fire on the deputies.

Harper County Sheriff’s deputies were called around 6:30 a.m. Thursday to a residential part of the town of about 1,000 people, which is 180 miles northwest of Oklahoma City. When the deputies arrived, the armed man ran and they caught up with him a few blocks away, state investigators said.

The man then shot at the deputies, hitting one of them, and they returned fire, killing him, according to the statement. Investigators declined to release the dead man’s name until his family is notified.

The wounded deputy was taken to a local hospital and then transferred to a facility in Oklahoma City. Investigators said the deputy is in stable condition and the injuries are not life-threatening.

Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation said it was asked to investigate the shooting by the local sheriff’s office and said it could not release any further information.
