Police: 18-year-old woman accused of crashing stolen vehicle into fence in Waterbury

A teenager was arrested after police allege she crashed a stolen vehicle into a residential fence in Waterbury on Sunday.

Officers who were patrolling the city spotted the collision in the area of 78 Wall St. where a 2010 Mercedes E350 was seen crashing into a small fence, according to Sgt. Joseph Morais of the Waterbury Police Department.

Morais said investigators found that the vehicle was stolen and was being driven by 18-year-old Jaylanie Ortiz of New Britain. She was treated for a suspected minor injury at an area hospital and was later charged with theft of a motor vehicle, interfering with an officer, evading responsibility, third-degree criminal mischief, traveling too fast for conditions and failure to obey a stop sign, according to Morais.

“The Waterbury Police Department remains committed to addressing auto theft-related crimes and ensuring the safety of our community,” Morais said in a statement.

Morais encouraged anyone with information about stolen vehicles or looking to report suspicious activity to contact the police department at 203-574-6941 or the Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at 203-755-1234.
