A look at the Norfolk Tides as they return home and begin their final series of the year, six games (weather permitting) against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, the top affiliate of the Miami Marlins.
Norfolk’s record: The Tides are 31-37 in the season’s second half and 61-80 overall. The Shrimp, headed to the IL championship series as the first-half champion, are 38-31 in the second half and 85-59 overall. Though the Shrimp have had a far better year, the Tides lead the head-to-head “Navy Town Showdown” 10-8, and the winner of the season series will receive a Ship’s Bell trophy.
New in town: Right-handed pitcher Evan Yates was promoted Sunday to the Tides from the Double-A Chesapeake Baysox in Bowie, Maryland. The 22-year-old from Cal State Fullerton is 6-7 with a 4.25 earned-run average in 92 2/3 innings of 25 games, including 13 starts, with three minor league teams this year. He yielded two runs to Durham in one inning of his Tides debut.
In the Jacksonville dugout: If his rehab assignment from a quadriceps problem continues, Tides fans could enjoy a reunion with infielder Connor Norby, who is on Miami’s injured list for the third time this season. The East Carolina product had 41 homers and 156 RBIs in 227 games over parts of three seasons with the Tides before being traded in July 2024 along with Kyle Stowers in the deal that sent pitcher Trevor Rogers to Baltimore. Stowers became an MLB All-Star this year, while Norby has hit .247 with six home runs and 31 RBIs in 77 games with the Marlins.
