Fall is here, which means flu season is on the horizon.
The flu shot is the best way to reduce the risk of a severe or moderate flu infection and reduce your chance of spreading it to others. Flu shots are available to everyone over six months old, and this year’s batch of flu shots seems to be a good match for the flu strains that are expected to circulate in the United States during the upcoming season.
Here are the places in the Lehigh Valley where you can get a flu shot.
Lehigh Valley Health Network will be holding its free annual flu shot clinics from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 11 at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hecktown Oaks, 3780 Hecktown Road, Lower Nazareth Township, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Integrated Health Campus, 240 Cetronia Road, South Whitehall Township.
Everyone receiving a flu shot at either location is asked to fill out a consent form and register online at LVHN.org/flushot. Those planning to receive a flu shot should wear loose-fitting clothing so the shot can be administered in the arm or the leg for children under 2 years old.
The Allentown Health Bureau will begin holding free flu shot clinics from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 26 at Alliance Hall, 245 N. 6th Street in Allentown. Additional clinics will be held every Friday at the same time and place.
The Lehigh County Coroner’s Office will hold a one-day free flu shot clinic from 2 to 6 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Lehigh County Forensic Center at 4350 Broadway, Allentown. Besides shots, tours of the forensic center as well as hot dogs and light refreshments, will be offered.
St. Luke’s University Health Network does not hold clinics and instead prefers that patients schedule shots with their family doctor, pharmacy or other vaccine provider.
Flu shots can also be obtained from major pharmacies like CVS and Walgreens, and grocery store pharmacies including Weis and Giant. If covered by insurance, these vaccines should come with no copay. Both allow walk-ins or allow customers to schedule in advance on their respective websites.
