William & Mary men rally with 3-point barrage, Virginia Tech outlasts South Carolina

Men’s basketball

William & Mary 83, Duquesne 79: Tunde Vahlberg Fasasi scored 17 points and Cade Haskins added 16 points, and both spearheaded a Tribe offense that made a season-high 15 3-pointers in a come-from-behind victory Tuesday night at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse in Pittsburgh.

William & Mary (8-2) led by as many as 16 points in the first half before falling behind. But trailing by five with 4:33 left, the Tribe rattled off a 7-0 spurt to retake the lead for good.

Haskins hit a key 3-pointer to pull W&M within two, and Ryan Jackson Jr and Jo’el Emanuel each made two free throws during a 10-second span before Vahlberg Fasasi’s third 3-pointer put the Tribe in front 81-77.

Five Tribe players scored in double figures led by Vahlberg Fasasi on 6-of-11 shooting, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range. Haskins made 4 of 8 3s, and Kilian Brockhoff added 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting from 3-point range.

Virginia Tech 86, South Carolina 83: Amari Hansberry scored 22 points and hauled in 14 rebounds, Ben Hammond added 16 points, and Virginia Tech took down South Carolina in overtime in an ACC/SEC Challenge matchup in Columbia, South Carolina.

Hansberry (10 of 16 from the floor) picked up his fourth double-double of the season in 39 minutes of action. The overtime frame featured nine lead changes and five ties, and Virginia Tech took the lead for good as Hammond made a layup with 13 seconds on the clock.

The Hokies (7-2) led for most of the first half, opening on an 8-1 run and keeping pace the rest of the way. They took a 37-34 lead into halftime.

South Carolina took the lead late in the second half thanks to a 7-0 run, capped off by Mike Sharavjamts’ five straight points. The game went to overtime tied at 70 after Hansberry made a layup with 2:43 remaining, and the teams couldn’t find a way to score in the final minutes.

Meechie Johnson paced the Gamecocks (5-3) with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting, adding six rebounds. Elijah Strong also had 18 points (6-of-16 shooting).

The Hokies won their first game in the third edition of the ACC/SEC Challenge, losing to Auburn and Vanderbilt in 2023 and 2024, respectively.

Women’s basketball

No. 18 Christopher Newport 89, Marymount 63: Elizabeth Creed finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds — her second straight double-double — and Madison McKenzie led all scorers with 19 points as the Captains won their home opener.

CNU won its fifth straight game and improved to 7-2 after moving up to No. 18 in the WBCA Coaches’ Poll on Tuesday.
