Four players scored 20 points each as Xavier raced to a comfortable early lead and celebrated the 25th anniversary of the first game at Cintas Center with a 99-69 victory over Old Dominion in men’s basketball Tuesday night in Cincinnati.
All Wright, Tre Carroll, Roddie Anderson and Jova Milicevic scored 20 points apiece to spearhead an offense that made 16 of 36 3-point attempts and scored 24 points off turnovers.
The Musketeers (3-2) led 51-29 at halftime and rebounded from back-to-back 19-point losses to Santa Clara and Iowa. Xavier finished with a 48-28 rebounding edge, shot 45.8% from the field and had 29 assists on 33 field goals.
ODU (2-3) dropped its second straight game by 20-plus points, following a 96-73 setback against George Washington.
LJ Thomas led the Monarchs with 13 points, followed by Drew McKenna with 12 and Robert Davis Jr. and Caelum Swanton-Rodger with 10 each.
Boston College 63, Hampton 52: Fred Payne scored a game-high 14 points as the Eagles (3-2) held off the Pirates in Boston in the first meeting between the two schools.
Xzavier Long and Daniel Johnson led HU with 11 points each.
Boston College led 37-26 at halftime and never trailed. The Pirates (2-4) shot just 12.5% in the opening 10 minutes of the second half as the Eagles extended their lead to 16 points.
No. 5 Duke 78, No. 24 Kansas 66: Cameron Boozer had 18 points and 10 rebounds, and twin brother Cayden made a couple of big second-half baskets for the Blue Devils (5-0) in the annual Champions Classic at Madison Square Garden.
The Jayhawks (3-2) were still without their best player, freshman Darryn Peterson, the nation’s top recruit and potentially the top pick in next year’s NBA draft, because of a lingering hamstring injury.
No. 17 Michigan State 83, No. 12 Kentucky 66: Kur Teng hit three of Michigan State’s season-high 11 3-pointers on the way to scoring a career-best 15 points, and the Spartans (4-0) won the Champions Classic’s first game over the Wildcats (3-2).
MSU’s Jaxon Kohler sank two 3s to finish with a team-high 20 points. Otega Oweh led Kentucky with 12 points.
MSU made 50% of its 3-point attempts after entering the game shooting 21.7% from long range — fourth-worst out of 361 Division I programs.
No. 18 North Carolina 73, Navy 61: Freshman Caleb Wilson had 23 points and 12 rebounds, plus four steals and three blocks for the Tar Heels (5-0). Luka Bogavac added 16 points for UNC.
Austin Benigni scored 19 points for Navy (2-3) and Jinwoo Kim added 14 in the Midshipmen’s first trip to Chapel Hill since 1936.
No. 19 UCLA 79, Sacramento State 48: Eric Dailey Jr. had 15 points and 12 rebounds, Xavier Booker scored 12 and the host Bruins (4-1) rode a new-look starting lineup to a victory over the Hornets (3-3). Trent Perry, Jamar Brown, Steven Jamerson II and Brandon Williams all started for the Bruins after making just two starts between them in the first four games of the season.
No. 21 Arkansas 84, Winthrop 83: Meleek Thomas scored a career-high 26 points as Arkansas scored the final six to rally past Winthrop. Arkansas took its final lead with 11 seconds left when Nick Pringle scored at the rim after a Winthrop turnover. After the basket, he and Winthrop’s Logan Duncomb became tangled.
As the officials attempted to break up the entanglement, Pringle threw Duncomb to the floor, leading to a brief delay as the play went to review. Pringle and Duncomb were issued offsetting technical fouls, and four players — two from Arkansas and two from Winthrop — were ejected for coming on to the floor from the bench.
James Madison 81, Towson 75: The Dukes (3-3) won a matchup of the preseason Sun Belt and Coastal Athletic Association favorites in Harrisonburg.
Bradley Douglas had 22 points and six assists for JMU. Justin McBride shot 8 for 12 from the field and 4 of 4 from the free-throw line to add 21 points.
Tyler Tejada posted 21 points and seven rebounds for the Tigers (3-2).
George Mason 79, Jacksonville 57: Masai Troutman’s 20 points and five rebounds off of the bench led the Patriots (5-0) in Fairfax. Kory Mincy scored 13 points and added three steals. The Dolphins (2-3) were led by Jaylen Jones’ 14 points.
Maryland Eastern Shore 83, Longwood 82, 2 OTs: Justin Monden had 19 points off the bench and Dorion Staples made a game-winning 3-pointer in double overtime for the Hawks (2-4) against the Lancers (3-2) in Farmville. Staples’ make with 56 seconds left in the second overtime period was his only score of the game.
Emanuel Richards made a tying jumper for Longwood with 1:12 remaining in regulation to send the game to its first overtime at 69-69. Teammate Johan Nziemi tied it up at 75-75 with a pair of free throws with seven seconds left in the first overtime.
Georgia Tech 68, Georgia Southern 66: Baye Ndongo scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and the Yellow Jackets (4-1) held off the Eagles (3-2) in Atlanta. Reserve Khayri Dunn scored 13 for Georgia Southern.
With about 10 seconds left, Georgia Tech’s Kowacie Reeves Jr. missed a free throw, but the Eagles failed to get off a shot for a chance to tie it.
Florida State 87, UT Martin 73: Cam Miles scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half, Robert McCray V finished with 16 points, and FSU (3-1) won in Tallahassee.
The Seminoles opened the second half on a 16-2 run and led 59-42. The Skyhawks (3-1) later got within seven points twice.
Syracuse 78, Monmouth 73: Donnie Freeman scored 18 points and made two late free throws for the Orange (4-0).The Hawks trailed 73-62 with 2:48 remaining, but went on a 10-1 run to cut their deficit to two points with 36 seconds remaining. Freeman was fouled quickly and put the Orange up by four.
Jason Rivera-Torres missed a tying 3-point attempt for Monmouth (1-3), which got 25 points from Justin Ray.
Stanford 93, Louisiana 66: Ebuka Okorie made 11 of 13 from the free-throw line and finished with 26 points, and Chisom Okpara scored a season-high 22 on 7-of-10 shooting for the host Cardinal (4-0). Joshua Lewis led the Ragin’ Cajuns (1-4) with 16 points.
California 67, Presbyterian 57: John Camden scored 20 points, Lee Dort added 15 and the Bears (4-1) won in Berkeley. They took the lead for good with about 12 minutes left against the Blue Hose (3-4).
South Carolina 87, Radford 58: Elijah Strong and Eli Ellis combined for 29 points off the bench for the host Gamecocks (4-0). Del Jones had 16 points for the Highlanders (2-4).
UNC Wilmington 85, East Carolina 60: Christian May’s 22 points and six rebounds sparked the Seahawks (3-1) to a home win. Joran Riley scored 19 for ECU (2-2).
Cornell 86, Army 73: Cooper Noard had 16 points for the Big Red (2-2) in Ithaca, New York, while Adam Tsang Hinton scored 15 points and added nine rebounds. Jorn Everson finished with 24 points for the Black Knights (1-4).
Women’s basketball
Penn 55, Norfolk State 50: The Quakers scored eight of the first 10 points in the final quarter and sealed the game with free throws at the Palestra in Philadelphia.
Penn (4-1) held NSU (2-4) scoreless for nearly five minutes of the fourth period before the Spartans pulled within three with 19 seconds left.
Cire Worley (13 points) and Jasha Clinton (10 points, 12 rebounds) led the Spartans.
Tina Njike led Penn with 12 points and Simone Sawyer finished with 11.
No. 6 Michigan 120, Binghamton 50: The host Wolverines (4-0) set a school record for points scored against a Division I team. Olivia Olson and Syla Swords each scored 15, McKenzie Mathurin had 14, Te’Yala Delfosse scored 13, and Ashley Solfilkanich and Macy Brown each added 12. Bella Pucci scored 14 for the Bearcats (2-2).
Richmond 72, Temple 57: Maggie Doogan finished with 31 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists for the Spiders (4-1) as they beat the Owls (3-2) at Robins Center.
