Wave Of Wall Street Banks Join JPMorgan In ChatGPT Crackdown

Wave Of Wall Street Banks Join JPMorgan In ChatGPT Crackdown

We noted earlier this week, “JPMorgan Chase & Co. might spark a trend among other Wall Street banks to restrict chatbots in the office.” And we were correct

Bloomberg reported that Bank of America Corp., Citigroup Inc., Deutsche Bank AG, Goldman Sachs Group Inc., and Wells Fargo & Co. are restricting AI-powered chatbot ChatGPT.

The Wall Street banks have blocked employees’ use of ChatGPT because of compliance issues with third-party software.

Bank of America execs told employees that ChatGPT is prohibited from business use, Bloomberg said, citing people with direct knowledge of the matter. Internal meetings at BofA revealed the chatbot technology must be properly vetted before it can be used for business communications. At Deutsche Bank, a spokesperson said the staff could no longer use the chatbot.

A Wells Fargo spokesperson said:

“We are imposing usage limits on ChatGPT, as we continue to evaluate safe and effective ways of using technologies like these.”

At Citigroup, the bank has blocked all access to ChatGPT, while Goldman Sachs restricted AI-powered bot on the trading floor, according to Financial News, citing sources.

JPMorgan was the first big bank to clamp down on the ChatGPT earlier this week. The move was primarily based on compliance issues tied to third-party software.

Financial News explains the reason for the wave of Wall Street banks banning ChatGPT this week:

Highly-regulated banks and financial institutions are notoriously cautious about allowing their employees access to third-party software and websites. Most still do not enable staff to access social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram when working in the office or using company devices.

US regulators also handed out more than $2bn in fines to a dozen large investment banks for employees’ unauthorized use of messaging platforms, including WhatsApp, largely by those in trading floor functions.

Before the ban, Bloomberg noted some of the uses of ChatGPT by industry insiders:

  • A salesperson at a US bank used ChatGPT’s search engine on his personal device to get an overview of a client. The task was completed in less time than it would take to scour the internet, but the person said it couldn’t be used in an internal report and had to be cross-checked for accuracy.

  • An oil trader used a version of ChatGPT to write a research note on the outlook for crude. It read well, she said, but the information was out-of-date and had to be fixed.

  • A stock trader in Taipei used it to compile key takeaways from US earnings, sparing himself tedious copying and pasting between documents. Still, he based investment decisions on his own notes. *

  • And a bond trader in mainland China wrote routine reports on policy analysis using AI to save time — part of which she then spent carefully fact-checking.

… and just like that, 15 seconds later — ChatGPT writes a full year outlook on the oil market.

There’s no doubt the AI-powered platform has saved the time of some traders and bankers. But some have called that into question:

“It may save time, but we don’t know if it’s true, which is the biggest downside of the tool.

“It can be used like an intelligent colleague in the office, going over your work and improving it,” Oded Netzer, a professor at Columbia Business School who researches data and technology, told Bloomberg.

Even with the chatbot’s impressive array of capabilities — from writing research reports to computer code, poems, songs, and even entire movie plots, to passing law, business, and medical exams, it’s not perfect, and some of the answers it produces has been found to have errors or be incredibly woke, and racist.

The head of trading at a top bank in the US spoke with Bloomberg under the condition of anonymity. He said ChatGPT has its limitations, explaining trading pits were automated years ago by algos but pointed out other segments of banks, such as fixed-income markets, could be automated down the line.

And why the hesitation to quickly embrace ChatGPT? Well, there’s this: “When the SEC knocks on your door and asks why did you execute that transaction, you have to have a better answer than, ‘Well, the machine told me to,'” Larry Tabb, an analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, explained.

Ex-felon accidently shoots himself at Las Vegas Strip casino

An ex-felon was hospitalized and will face felony weapon charges after allegedly shooting himself in the thigh with a concealed unregistered handgun while walking through a Las Vegas Strip casino, authorities said Friday.

Ronnie Delouth, 30, of Henderson, faces a Feb. 28 court hearing in Las Vegas, where the roster at the Clark County Detention Center showed he has not yet been transferred in custody from a hospital to the jail.

Delouth was hospitalized in critical condition early Tuesday after security video showed him suddenly writhe and fall to the casino floor while walking alone through the Cosmopolitan Las Vegas, according to media citing a police report.

The report said Delouth was seen pulling a handgun from his waistband, throwing it under a slot machine and beginning to crawl away before security officers arrived.

Las Vegas police on Friday were processing a request from The Associated Press for the report.

Police retrieved the weapon and characterized it as a .40-caliber ghost gun with no serial number that would allow it to be traced. The report said it contained one spent bullet casing and 11 unfired rounds.

Delouth is a convicted felon prohibited from possessing a firearm, according to records showing that he pleaded guilty in 2012 in Las Vegas to burglary and attempted robbery and served time in prison.

It was not clear Friday if Delouth had an attorney who could comment about his case. A lawyer who represented him in the past did not immediately respond to a message from AP.

Brian Ahern, a spokesman for MGM Resorts International, the corporate operator of the Cosmopolitan, declined to comment about Delouth’s case but said firearms are prohibited at all MGM Resorts properties.

Yemeni rebels frustrated by leader’s calls to delay seccession

Yemen’s southern separatists on Friday slammed statements by their ally, the head of Yemen’s presidential council, in which he said that now is not the right time to discuss southern independence.

The comments come as Saudi Arabia, which leads a coalition fighting for Yemen’s internationally recognized government that includes the separatists, and their rivals the Houthi rebels are in back-channel talks on the country’s wider war.

In a statement, the Southern Transitional Council, an umbrella group of heavily armed and well-financed militias propped up by the United Arab Emirates, said that the comments, “showed a lack of seriousness.”

SAUDI ARABIA INVESTS $1B IN YEMEN’S CENTRAL BANK

It was in response to an interview published on Thursday in the London-based newspaper “Asharq Al-Awsat,” in which the head of Yemen’s Presidential Council Rashid al-Alami said “talking about a solution at this time might not be appropriate,” in reference to the issue of southern separatism.

The council’s statement said the “southern issue cannot be allowed to be moved or delayed,” it said, adding that it would be in violation of previous agreements between the country’s internationally recognized government and the council.

Reports of revived communications between Yemen’s warring sides in the Gulf Arab country of Oman, a traditional mediator in the Middle East, surfaced earlier this year.

The separatists, represented by Yemen’s Southern Transitional Council, are an umbrella group of heavily armed and well-financed militias propped up by the United Arab Emirates. Though the UAE is officially part of the Saudi-led coalition, its support for the separatists has threatened the alliance. The separatists enjoy loyalty through much of southern Yemen, and have repeatedly pushed to break up Yemen into two countries, as it was between 1967 and 1990.

FIGHTING CONTINUES IN YEMEN AS US SEEKS CEASEFIRE IN WORLD’S WORST HUMANITARIAN CRISIS

Yemen’s war began in 2014 when the Houthis swept down from their northern stronghold and seized the capital, Sanaa, along with much of the country’s north. In response, the Saudi-led coalition intervened in 2015 to try to restore the internationally recognized government to power.

Al-Alami, a Saudi ally and currently on a diplomatic tour of Europe, became head of Yemen’s presidential council last April. He told Asharq Al-Awsat that while he supports Saudi Arabia taking the lead as mediator in the Omani-brokered dialogue, any final peace agreement must be between the internationally recognized government and the Houthi rebels.

Yemen’s war has killed more than 150,000 people, according to the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project, including over 15,000 civilians, and has become a proxy war in the region. It has also spawned one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, pushing the Mideast’s poorest nation into near famine.
