LeBron James chides Anthony Davis’ ‘brain fart’ in Lakers win over Timberwolves

Los Angeles Lakers forward Anthony Davis nearly cost the team an immediate spot into the NBA playoffs on Tuesday night when he fouled Minnesota Timberwolves guard Mike Conley Jr. with seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

The Lakers were up three points in the final seconds and all Davis had to do was close out on Conley as the guard tried to take a last-second three-pointer to tie the game. Davis ran into Conley on the close out and Conley sunk all three free throws to tie the game.

The foul essentially negated Dennis Schroder’s go-ahead bucket with 1.4 seconds remaining.

“It’s unfortunate A.D. had a brain fart and messed his game-winner up,” LeBron James said after the game, pointing to Schroder.

Davis came over and apologized.

The Lakers big man showed up in the box score as Los Angeles won in overtime 108-102

LAKERS RALLY BACK FOR OVERTIME VICTORY IN PLAY-IN TOURNAMENT TO CLINCH SEVENTH SEED IN NBA PLAYOFFS

Davis played 43 minutes and had 24 points, 15 rebounds, four assists, three blocks and two steals. James had 30 points to lead the Lakers in 45 minutes. He added 10 rebound and six assists in the win.

“It took everything out of us to get to where we are, and it took more out of us tonight,” Davis said. “But we’ve got a couple of days before we go to Memphis to start preparing for them. It’s been a battle. It’s been an up-and-down season for us, but now is the time to show who we are, and we showed it tonight.”

Schroder had 21 points, four rebounds and two assists.

“Once you get to the end of things, to have everyone healthy, to be playing in the type of rhythm we’re playing in, to defend at the level that we’re defending at, going into the most important time of the year, you can’t ask for a better situation,” Lakers coach Darvin Ham said.

The Lakers will play the Memphis Grizzlies in the first round of the playoffs.

New Jersey firefighters battle 500-acre forest fire in Ocean County

Firefighters were battling a massive 500-acre forest fire in Ocean County, New Jersey, officials said.

The fire started Tuesday night and was 10% contained, according to WPVI-TV.

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service and Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst Fire Department were working to gain control of the blaze that was burning on federal, state and private property along Route 539 and Horicon Avenue.

Hong Kong’s ZA Bank wants to be the go-to bank for crypto startups

As the collapses of Signature Bank and Silvergate sent crypto companies scrambling, a virtual bank from Hong Kong is extending a warm welcome to web3 startups.

Hong Kong-based ZA Bank is now allowed to serve as the settlement bank for regulated web3 companies in the city, the company said today at Hong Kong’s web3 festival, an event that’s backed by the region’s government and has attracted crypto startups and institutions from all over Asia.

The online bank is set to facilitate crypto-fiat conversions in conjunction with two licensed exchanges in Hong Kong, HashKey and OSL, where customers can swap crypto into fiat currencies. In other words, the crypto-fiat conversion part is happening over the regulated exchanges rather than ZA Bank directly.

ZA Bank will likely be settling transactions for more crypto exchanges as more companies apply to obtain digital assets permits from the Hong Kong authorities.

In addition, ZA Bank, which was established by Chinese online insurer ZhongAn in 2017 as one of Hong Kong’s first virtual banks, has started to offer basic banking services to local web3 startups, a category of businesses widely underserved by traditional financial institutions.

It will be interesting to see if the handful of other online banks in Hong Kong will follow suit to compete for web3 clients and if ZA Bank’s offering will attract more crypto companies to set up shop in the Asian financial center.

The move is happening at a time when Hong Kong is trying to position itself as a crypto-friendly alternative to other hubs like the U.S. and Singapore and act as a sandbox for web3 businesses that originate from China, where crypto trading is illegal. The city has been revamping its digital assets regulatory framework, which tentatively plans to legalize retail trading of major cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ether.

“As Hong Kong is stepping up efforts to cultivate a Web3-friendly environment, ZA Bank’s online account opening for Web3 startups represents a major step forward in the integration of traditional banking services with the Web3 world,” said Ronald Iu, CEO of ZA Bank.

“It signals a greater acceptance and recognition of the importance of this emerging sector and hopefully will encourage other financial institutions to follow suit in offering tailored banking services for Web3 companies. We look forward to exploring collaborations with key global Web3 businesses such as HashKey, OKX, and more.”

Fast-Moving Wildfire In New Jersey Forces Evacuations

Fast-Moving Wildfire In New Jersey Forces Evacuations

A fast-moving forest fire in central New Jersey’s Manchester Township prompted evacuations on Tuesday night.

New Jersey Forest Fire Service (NJFFS) tweeted early Wednesday morning that the fire reached 2,500 acres in size and is 10% contained.

NJFFS said 75 building structures are “threatened.” The fire agency said:

“Residents evacuated have been relocated to the Manchester Township High School and are being supported by the American Red Cross, Manchester Township EMS, Manchester Police Department and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department.”

The footage of the fire is shocking.

“April marks peak wildfire season in New Jersey. About 7,000 acres of the state’s forests are damaged or destroyed each year by an average of 1,500 wildfires,” NYTimes said, adding that central and southern New Jersey is at high risk for fires.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Former Proud Boys leader Zachary Rehl claims the group had ‘no objective’ ahead of Jan. 6

A former leader in the Proud Boys took the witness stand Tuesday to fight seditious conspiracy and other serious charges in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, telling jurors the group had “no objective” that day.

Zachary Rehl, who was a chapter leader from Philadelphia, became the first defendant in the high-stakes trial of five Proud Boys to testify. It’s a potentially risky move in one of the most serious cases to emerge from the riot.

“There was no objective on Jan. 6. I even asked the night before in the chat,” Rehl, 37, testified, referring to the chat the Proud Boys used to communicate ahead of the riot. “There were no objectives. We were just going to walk around the city. I said over and over again, I want the legal process to play out. That’s the process our country was founded on.”

Rehl is on trial alongside with former Proud Boys national chairman Enrique Tarrio and three others accused of plotting to forcibly stop the transfer of power from President Donald Trump to President Joe Biden. They face up to 20 years behind bars if convicted of seditious conspiracy.

PROUD BOYS’ DEFENSE PLANS TO SUBPOENA TRUMP TO TESTIFY IN JAN. 6 SEDITIOUS CONSPIRACY TRIAL: REPORT

One other defendant, Dominic Pezzola of Rochester, New York, is also expected testify before the long-running trial comes to a close as soon as next week.

Tarrio is not expected to take the stand. Nor is Ethan Nordean of Auburn, Washington, or self-described Proud Boys organizer Joseph Biggs of Ormond Beach, Florida.

Rehl marched with other Proud Boys on Jan. 6 and entered the Capitol through a door on the west side of the building, but he testified he waited until he knew all members of Congress were out before he went inside. He said no one told him to attack the Capitol, hurt anyone or damage anything, and he didn’t do any of those things.

He said he joined the group in 2018 to build his network as he tried to launch a business, though he acknowledged it likely had the opposite effect. He framed his membership in the group as more of a social way to drink with friends, and referred to Trump as a businessman he had respected since childhood but also a “loudmouth.”

Rehl’s decision to testify could open him up to grilling from prosecutors when the case resumes Wednesday.

JAN. 6 SEDITIOUS CONSPIRACY TRIAL AGAINST PROUD BOYS BEGINS IN DOJ’S THIRD CASE BRINGING CIVIL WAR-ERA CHARGE

He was a member of a group Tarrio created for “national rally planning” called the Ministry of Self Defense. He warned prospective members about a week before Jan. 6 that it was going to be a “completely different operation” and wouldn’t be a “night march” for “flexing” their arms, prosecutors said in charging documents.

His social-media messages cited by prosecutors included one from on Nov. 27, 2020, that said, “Hopefully the firing squads are for the traitors that are trying to steal the election from the American people.”

The evening of Jan. 6, in response to his mother asking if he was OK, Rehl responded that he was, and said it “seems like our raid of the capital set off a chain reaction of events throughout the country. i’m so (expletive) proud.”

Former Proud Boys who have testified for the prosecution after pleading guilty to criminal charges have said that while they weren’t aware of a detailed plan for storming the Capitol, they shared a common goal to keep Trump in office.

Rehl is not the first Jan. 6 defendant facing seditious conspiracy charges to take the witness stand. In the first trial of members and associates of another far-right extremist group, the Oath Keepers, three out of five defendants testified — with mixed results.

Oath Keepers leader Stewart Rhodes testified that he had no idea they were going to join the mob and storm the Capitol and said he was upset after he found out that some members did. Despite his testimony, he was convicted of seditious conspiracy and other felonies, and is expected to be sentenced next month.

But two other Oath Keepers defendants who took the witness stand were cleared of the sedition charge. Jurors, however, found all five defendants guilty of obstruction of an official proceeding: Congress’ certification of Biden’s electoral victory.
