Musk says Twitter will offer “amnesty” to suspended accounts

Elon Musk said Thursday Twitter will grant “a general amnesty” to accounts that had been suspended from the platform beginning next week. The CEO posted a poll the day earlier over whether the platform should restore affected accounts.

The news comes within a week of Musk also ending former president Donald Trump’s ban from the platform after running a similar poll. Trump was banned after the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, but said he doesn’t intend to return to the platform.

Musk’s poll to users included a caveat that suspended account holders could rejoin the platform “provided they have not broken the law or engaged in egregious spam.” Around 3.2 million users responded to the poll, which voted 72.4% in favor of amnesty.

“The people have spoken. Amnesty begins next week. Vox Populi, Vox Dei,” Musk said, using a Latin phrase that means “The voice of the people is the voice of god.”

Historically, Twitter has banned accounts that glorify hate and harassment, have the potential to incite violence or rampantly spread misinformation that can lead to harm. Some high profile individuals who were banned include MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell after he made a series of claims that Trump actually won the 2020 presidential election; former Trump advisor and former executive chairman of Breitbart Steve Bannon after he said Anthony Fauci and FBI Director Christopher Wray should be beheaded; and Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes for violating the site’s policy of prohibiting violent extremist groups.

It’s unclear from Musk’s brief tweet how Twitter will deal with content moderation in the future, now that more potentially problematic voices will be returning to the platform. These concerns have only been exacerbated by Musk’s mass layoffs and the general exodus of employees who’d rather quit than be “hardcore.”

New York City man attempted to rape woman on moving subway train: police

New York City police arrested a man on Thursday for allegedly attempting to rape a woman last week on a moving subway train in Manhattan.

Chris Tapia, 23, of Staten Island, is charged with attempted rape, sexual abuse, forcible touching, and public lewdness.

Police said a 24-year-old woman was on a moving northbound ‘4’ train on Nov. 17 when an unknown individual sat next to her.

The individual touched the woman and tried to pull down her skirt, police said. The woman tried to flee to another train car to safety, police said.

The suspect detrained at the Bowling Green subway station and boarded a ferry to Staten Island.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Tapia had retained an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

Police are asking anyone with information on this incident to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-8477.

The alleged sexual assault comes amid a general uptick in violence on New York City subways. Earlier this week a woman and a good Samaritan were injured on an L train pulling into the 14th Street Union Square station in Manhattan in an unprovoked attacked.

Dallas Cowboys dominate second half in win over NFC East rival Giants

The Dallas Cowboys offense is continuing to click on all cylinders.

In their last five games, Dallas is averaging 33.8 points per game, going 4-1 in that span.

A Giants touchdown was called back due to an ineligible man downfield, but Graham Gano still managed to knock a 57-yard field goal. After Ezekiel Elliott gave the Cowboys a 7-3 lead, Saquon Barkley answered with a rushing touchdown of his own to make it 10-7 Big Blue. Dak Prescott also threw two interceptions in the first half, the latter of which the Giants were able to turn into another field goal before the half ended.

Prescott then led a stout second-half opening drive, going 75 yards on 14 plays, the final one being a 15-yard touchdown for Dalton Schultz – Brett Maher’s ensuing PAT gave the Cowboys a 14-13 lead.

That was just a preview of what was to come.

The Giants then turned the ball over on downs on their own half of the field, and Dallas answered with another Shultz touchdown. Dallas led 21-13 with two minutes to go in the third.

After the Giants punted early in the fourth, Dallas scored their third-straight touchdown, this time a rush by Peyton Hendershot, and the Cowboys led 28-13.

Cowboys spread bettors…look away. The Giants scored a touchdown with eight seconds to go to cover. They tried for the onside kick, but CeeDee Lamb recovered to ice the ballgame.

It wasn’t just the Cowboys offense that impressed in Jerry World, as Dallas was able to contain the Giants superb running game, allowing just 90 yards on the ground.

Entering Thursday, New York was rushing for 157.2 yards per game, fourth in the NFL.

Lamb led all receivers with six catches for 106 yards, while Elliott and Tony Pollard combined for 152 yards on 34 carries.

The Cowboys, now 8-3, will host the Indianapolis Colts in Week 13, while the 7-4 Giants, who have lost three of their last four, will welcome in the 6-5 Washington Commanders.

Idaho murders: Prosecutor spotted at police headquarters on Thanksgiving as hunt for campus killer intensifies

EXCLUSIVE: MOSCOW, Idaho Latah County Prosecuting Attorney Bill Thompson visited Moscow police headquarters Thursday as investigators worked through the Thanksgiving holiday on a shocking quadruple murder that shocked the quiet community and the rest of the county.

Thompson arrived around 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day as detectives from state and local police and FBI agents intensified their search for a suspect in the slayings of four University of Idaho students who were stabbed to death in the middle of the night earlier this month.

Thompson did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

Aaron Snell, communications director for the Idaho State Police, said that Thompson’s presence alone does not indicate a break in the case.

IDAHO MURDERS: INVESTIGATORS WORK THROUGH THANKSGIVING DAY AS COLLEGE TOWN SHUTS DOWN

“He’s there daily,” he said “He continues to work through the holiday/weekend.”

Thompson is not the only one working overtime on the case. On Thanksgiving Day, FBI agents, detectives and uniformed officers were coming and going from the building as they continued to seek answers in the students’ slayings.

One law enforcement officer said at dusk that investigators planned to work well into the evening.

“They will work through this holiday and through the weekend,” Snell said earlier.

Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20, were found dead hours after police say someone attacked them in their sleep on Nov. 13.

UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO STUDENTS KILLED: A TIMELINE OF EVENTS

The three women lived together in a house just off the University of Idaho campus in Moscow, and Chapin was visiting his girlfriend, Kernodle.

Two downstairs roommates and a pet dog in the home were unharmed, according to authorities.

Police have not publicly identified any suspects or persons of interest.

IDAHO MURDERS: THIRD UNSOLVED STABBING ATTACK RESURFACES AMID COLLEGE SLAYING MYSTERY

But they have ruled out the two female roommates who were downstairs at the time of the murders, a man who appeared on surveillance video at a food truck at the same time as Goncalves and Mogen shortly before they returned home, a “private party” driver who took them to the house, Goncalves’ ex-boyfriend and a group of friends who were present at the house Sunday morning when the initial 911 call was placed.

IDAHO MURDERS: WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT VICTIM KAYLEE GONCALVES’ REPORTED STALKER

Police said they were looking into reports that Gonzales had a stalker before the attack – but had not yet found evidence.

“Kaylee mentioned having a stalker, but detectives have been unable to corroborate the statement,” police said Wednesday. “Investigators are requesting anyone with information about a potential stalker, or unusual instances, to contact the tip line.”

Police said Wednesday they’d taken 4,000 photographs and collected 103 “pieces of evidence,” including the contents of three dumpsters on King Road as part of the investigation.

They are asking for anyone with surveillance images in the surrounding area to turn them over.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the tip line at 208-883-7180 or email tipline@ci.moscow.id.us.

“If You Don’t Know What’s On The Thanksgiving Menu, It’s You”

“If You Don’t Know What’s On The Thanksgiving Menu, It’s You”

By Michael Every of Rabobank

If you wanted to embody how the turkeys running things react when confronted with the fact that they voted for Thanksgiving and Christmas, it would be Bankman-Fraud being invited to speak at a New York Times event next week alongside Yellen, President Zelenskiy, and Ben Affleck/Batman. Alleged harems, billions of dollars in client money missing, and public accusations it was used as a personal and political piggy bank? Hey – have a seat alongside the global elite (and Batman) to say sorry and tell us about all the good things you did! Madoff obviously wasn’t available.

If only this nonsense were a one-off, but the market heads into the US Thanksgiving holiday in fine mood because ‘the Fed minutes were dovish’, confirming their wrong-all-year view. Yet the compromise between Fed doves, who are there, and Fed hawks, who are running things, is that while the pace of hikes will slow, the ultimate level of rates will be higher. If I carve you with a smaller knife, but more times, is that ‘dovish’? Try ‘turkey-ish’! Philip Marey, well ahead of the Street in calling a 5% peak, has his view here: he thinks 50bp is coming in December, but rates aren’t going down at all until 2024. That’s a sour cranberry, or real stuffing for some turkeys given Treasury yields fell after the minutes, and the dollar sold off.

Note the RBNZ flirted with 100bp yesterday before going a record 75, and are saying their overnight cash rate needs to hit 5.5%, even at the cost of 3-quarter recession. Yes, rates are contractionary there – and they want them to be: “Spend wisely this Christmas,” said Governor Orr as he signed off, literally encouraging Kiwis to not be turkeys, and to save, not spend. Likewise, the BOC governor just told parliament that Canadian rates need to rise even higher because inflation is not under control. Again, note the absence of turkeys.

In China, there is buzz about another cut in banks’ reserve requirement ratios (RRR). There are still turkeys who think this matters despite umpteen RRR cuts already to no effect. As Covid cases soar, lockdowns intensify, and footage of unrest emerges at the world’s largest iPhone factory, Bloomberg asks, ‘Is a Wealth Tax How Xi Fills China’s Empty Coffers?’ Months ago Western investment banks were piling into ‘wealth management opportunities’; now, some are slashing jobs after seeing only ‘poultry’ returns. Relatedly, Bloomberg flagged ‘High-Yield Party Returns to Emerging Markets Too Cheap to Ignore’ earlier this week; how long until the ‘Oops, They Got a Lot Cheaper’ headline emerges?

In Europe, ECB speakers were generally hawkish. However, European politicians said ‘yelp’ – which is what a turkey says, as well as having the more regular meaning of surprise/panic.

From January, Germany will start a “double-kaboom” policy. Not losing to two late goals in football, which the rest of Europe would love, but a EUR200bn gas and electricity subsidy, which Europe won’t. Households and SMEs will see gas prices capped at 12 EUR cents gross/KwH for 80% of their previous consumption until April 2024, and electricity at 40 EUR cents/KwH. For industry, the gas cap is 7 EUR cents net for 70% of consumption, and electricity is 13 EUR cents plus taxes, levies, and surcharges. Notably, Germany has already faced EU anger over the fact that it can afford to save itself while others can’t: with Germans looking after Germans in this crisis, which Germans looking after Germans got the EU into, expect EU knives to be sharpened.

Moreover, Politico says ‘EU plans subsidy war chest as industry faces ‘existential’ threat from US’, noting: “If it weren’t enough that energy prices look set to remain permanently far higher than those in the US thanks to Russia’s war in Ukraine, US President Joe Biden is also currently rolling out a $369 billion industrial subsidy scheme to support green industries under the Inflation Reduction Act. EU officials fear that businesses will now face almost irresistible pressure to shift new investments to the US rather than Europe. EU industry chief Thierry Breton is warning that Biden’s new subsidy package poses an “existential challenge” to Europe’s economy.

The European Commission and countries including France and Germany have realized they need to act quickly if they want to prevent the Continent from turning into an industrial wasteland… the EU is now working on an emergency scheme to funnel money into key high-tech industries.”

In short, the EU will resist US mercantilism; which is resisting Chinese mercantilism; which Europe has had no issue with for decades. Yet Europe overlooks that they are the least prepared bloc for such a realpolitik backdrop: talk about turkeys voting for Christmas! Indeed, they are saying they will push back against pro-EU President Biden while:

  • Running large twin deficits, as the German fiscal deficit is about to get much larger due to the “double-kaboom”, which smells like a potential market Cluster-Truss;
  • The EU energy crisis is only being tempered by imports of LNG from the US;
  • The EU are reliant on US weapons to fight the must-win war in Ukraine;
  • The EU are reliant on exports to the US; and
  • The EU are reliant on Eurodollar swaplines from the US to maintain financial stability at a time when the Fed is raising rates, which it still is.

More realistically, the EU also announced a gas price cap that does not actually cap gas prices; and the G7 announced a Russian oil price cap that does not actually cap the price of Russian oil.

On energy, gas prices are low now, but will only rise over 2023. Oil prices are sending a clearer signal, but wait and see what happens if the Fed does what the market wants for Christmas. I have kept saying that when we see long US yields go down and commodities tumble it will mean something: we are seeing that now.

Yet yelp all you want, but that is not compatible with a weaker dollar. If the US is in trouble, try being everyone else with a lag. Mercantilism is a force very much on the US side, and is as much a story for 2023 as any ‘pivots’.

As they say, if you don’t know what’s on the Thanksgiving menu – it’s you.
